| 364701 | 2005-06-21 23:35:00 | I would imagine the ebonic speakers are doing everything they can to be seperate and to propagate a barrier. If thats what they want, then good on em. Whose to say that the path to righteousness is through correct spelling on a job application?,or a job for that matter?,or that those that don't hit the milestones set by others are failing? Maybe we should all just go back to the jungles, The monkey's don't look to unhappy with there lot.... Muhahahahaha. Best I have a coffee..... Er......... |

If ebonic speakers can't communicate with the majority of the population, then that sows the seeds of misunderstanding, mistrust, and discrimination. Against them unfortunately. Which leads to resentment etc etc. | Winston001 (3612) | ||

| 364705 | 2005-06-22 03:59:00 | People, usually in/with (some) authority, have recognised for some time that language is a powerful tool for both influencing power and subjugating those that they don't wish to have it. It can also influenece the common pull of a nation as it can do for a smaller group within. As noted, english is a colourful and varied language. The alteration of english to a simplified (txt) or regionalised form may have appeal for those in the know but, can only marginalise the users if that's all they know, as they lose the benefit of meaning and nuances that fuller communication provides. I have heard some say that txt, etc, are simply a sign of an evolving language. Crap, don't try that reverse elitism, it's as bad as the other form, while some expressions may be taken up as new words, that's not how a language evolves, it's how it devolves. English is an evolving or changing language, but "dumbing down" or decreasing it's usefulness is not a refinement and improvement in any shape or form. For example, how many of you would like to work from a hardware or software manual written in txt? It's bad enough trying to decipher a translated version, where the author has actually tried to be correct(ish), isn't it. Oh, and BTW, I have a constant battle to get my english usage somewhere in the region of correct. I probably fail miserably more often than I realise, but at least I give it a crack. |

Muhahahaha.Murrays "reverse elitism" comment rings true, however the use of such "words" as "B4" to me make sence in a medium that requires that we get as much meaning as possable with only a limited amount of charactors. its when it gets turned into something that only the in crowd can read, that i can't be bothered. |

| 364708 | 2005-06-25 05:41:00 | I've decided to write an essay about my experience of joining PressF1 forum . Please comment on my grammar and vocabulary! Question: You have joined PC World forum for a long time . Write an essay describing your experience of joining this particular forum . One day, while I was in a state of boredom during the lunch time, I decided to walk over to the library to have a read . I grabbed a computer magazine named "PC World NZ" . After reading a couple of pages, I was presented with a section dedicated for answering readers' questions (questions or question?) regarding computer accessories and peripherals . On the bottom of the page, I saw a boxed words that says "Got a question? Let a reader answer . . . . . . " . Being a computer-literated person and a faithful Buddhist, I determined to participate the forum to put my knowledge to good use . I copied down the URL so that I can check (check or checked?) it out later . Being a newbies (is it singular or plural?) to a forum, I was relatively stunned at how it works . Participants are free to post any messages they like without the approval by the supervisors (I was told of the term "moderators" later on) . Of course, those who post offensive and undesirable post will be noticed and given a warning . Besides this, I'd found some interesting threads such as NZers' opinion on its multiple ISPs . After signing up for an account using under the username "jameskst", I happily returned to the homepage and tried to login for the first time . To my dismay, my used-to trusty IE displayed a message declaring proudly that the password was not recognise . After several attempts of trying, I quit visiting PC forum for a few days . Somehow or another, the notion of joining this forum floated up again in my mind . I tried to do sign in again using the same name and password, but fail . I then create another account using my present username "jameskan" and was emailed the login information . Voila! This time it works (works or worked?) and I eagerly post a couple of messages under the PressF1 section that require attention . Well, what more can I say? After participating this forum more than 3 months, I get to known who is the boss over here and who is the "chatty" type person . For example, I know that Jen, Mary and Chill S . are the moderators while BB is the Administrator . I also know that Beetle sometimes can be the main target of cruel jokes as well as Metla can be a bit crazy and talk about ireelevant topics under the wrong threads (no offense meant;) ) . I've also (I'd or I've?) added several members of this forum into my MSN Messenger contact list such as Prescott, Growly, wintertide and sal . I also learned that there are some real knowledgeable and intelligent people such as Terry Poritt and Graham L . I hope that I will get to meet some of you face-to-face in the future! Cheers :) |
