658383 2008-04-13 22:00:00 But I thought a memory stick was a non-geek term for a RAM module.

Memory stick = thumb drive = USB stick = USB flash drive

..........

RAM = RAM

658386 2008-04-14 06:13:00 Yep, cheapness is a good indication of read/write speeds.

I bought a cheap Transcend 8GB USB drive for $90 about 18 months ago, never had any probs with it and as crappy as the write speeds are (700 MB in 2 mins), it went through the wash last weekend and I'd basically written it off. Tried it the next day it was as good as new. Maybe a wash every now and then is a good idea, lol.

WOW, $90 8Gb stick, My Corsair Voyager 8GB cost $300!!!!, 18months ago!!

Yep, but as I said, it's the cheapest one around (www.pricespy.co.nz).

658388 2008-04-14 11:27:00 At the start of the year I was in Shanghai where I bought a 32G "Sony" labeled pen drive nicely packaged for NZ$25. I made the market place seller insert the drive into a PC and put some files on it. I should have removed the drive and re-inserted since this is where the problems started! It was so unreliable - I could get a few hours out of it sometimes if I re-formatted it.

So I dismantled it in the vice to see the insides and bought a 8G drive from Flashcards for just over $50 - it is great.

658391 2008-04-14 13:46:00 Aside from the fact that we're on the wrong fred Vallis, I gotta agree re the A-data RAM. I have 4 x 1gig sticks stuffed in to my board, running XP 64 without a hitch. Not an overclockers dream but it's cheap and cheerful and gets the job done.

As for flash memory, I have Sandisk that haven't faltered after several years of regular use and a 1gig Silicon Power that I picked up from a photographic store that's been going great guns too (I'd never heard of it previously, but the nice sales person said it was good enough and they don't fib). From my perspective, portable storage has to be reliable above all else, so I don't mind paying a little extra to insure my files.
