But if you want to spend money on things that you'll never see I can send you my bank details if you want.

No. The point of future proofing is that you get the stuff now so you don't have to keep upgrading.

Yea. I guess 2Gb is all I need. I was more concerned that when I move to Vista, 2Gb wont be enough for gaming

657898 2008-04-11 02:35:00 If you are dealing with big files like workstation, photography tif and raw files, video, music that kinda stuff yeah ....

On a 64bit OS, sure. Otherwise. 2x1. If you want to spend more money than neccessary then get higher clocked RAM.

657899 2008-04-11 02:37:00 For games I don't think you can say buy now so you don't need to upgrade in the future ...

Gamers is one of those that require more freq upgrades.

In terms of upgrading, gamers I think may need to do more major upgrades that might mean a new motherboard and stuff like that ... so your RAM may not be reusable....

Depends how picky you are with speed too ..

Sounds like the expensive way of doing it to me . If you buy what you need now then you'll save yourself money in the longrun . When your needs rise, then if you've bought well (Good PSU, MoBo) then you should be able to upgrade at relatively little expense .

That's my idea of futureproofing . Not buying the best now, but leaving room for upgrading when you need to, that's if you plan to . If you think that you'll be able to make a comp now, at a budget, that's going to last well for years without an upgrade, you're probably fooling yourself .

Anyway, good to see you've seen sense . And happy gaming . :punk

657901 2008-04-11 03:09:00 A fried of mine runs 2x 1GB and 2x 512MB to get 3GB of ram. Different brands as far as I know, runs perfectly. As long as you have matched sticks on the same channel, it will work. the channels are separate so you can have different sizes/different brand/timings etc between them Agent_24 (57)
657902 2008-04-13 00:57:00 Your saying that 32bit OS can only support a total of 3.5Gb ram and that INCLUDES the GFX ram?

So I have 2Gb ram + 1Gb GFX ram = can only have 512Mb ram left?

XP and Vista 32Bit support max. only 3,12 Ram. XP use for an application max. 2GB.

32Bit OS can adress 4GB Ram, the Vram of the vga also is in this adressroom and MS limited XP and Vista by 3,12GB.
