| 364847 | 2005-06-18 02:41:00 | Thanks to all for the alternatives to Google. Now here is a specific search topic that I cannot get a good answer: I would like to read blogs of Iraqis living in Baghdad. Searches reveal US soldiers' blogs, but not Iraqis. Maybe because I rarely read blogs and am fairly ignorant of them. Anyone??? |

What is interesting is that one can't access any Iraqi websites (they end in the '.iq' (www.computeruser.com) suffix). A search on google / Yahoo with the 'site:iq' qualifier turns up absolutely nothing. Yet a search with 'site:ir' turns up heaps. Is this a Western block on Iraqi opinions perhaps? E-censorship at its worst? That might explain why you only find marine blogs. |

Just use the search term "iraq blog" and then look at the "tree" where they are grouped according to various criteria. This is the good thing about Vivisimo - results are grouped so that you don't have to wade through the results like in Google. | vinref (6194) | ||
| 364851 | 2005-06-18 06:12:00 | I've tried A9.com, but still prefer Google. Can anyone recommend a search engine other than Google or are we PF1ers Google addicts? Yahoo Advanced Search (search.yahoo.com) seems quite good, as is Google's Advanced Search. I found this...don't know how, but it sure is a fun search engine..... :D http://clusty.com/ sorry to be late in the response..I was fishing all day... |

| 364853 | 2005-06-18 10:57:00 | I found this...don't know how, but it sure is a fun search engine..... :D http://clusty.com/ sorry to be late in the response..I was fishing all day... Thanks. Clusty looks interesting but I am not sure just how it is different to Vivisimo... Clusty is the search site owned and operated by Vivísimo that aims to change the way people search online. It uses our award-winning Clustering Engine to organize search results into folders grouping similar items together. Thus a search for pearl organizes the top 250-500 results into subject folders such as Jewelry, Pearl Harbor, Pearl Jam, Steinbeck Novel and Daniel Pearl. Clusty allows users to focus on the area of interest without all the chaff. Vivísimo developed the Clustering Engine for enterprise search and only offered it on our web site as a demonstration of its capabilities. However, as international coverage, industry awards and word-of-mouth promotion brought millions of users to the site, we saw a huge demand from our users for a feature-rich, dedicated consumer search site. Clusty serves our mission to organize web search and make it far more productive for you. It goes beyond simple search and combines the power of clustering with meta-search to provide the most productive and flexible user search experience. What is the Vivísimo Clustering Engine? The specially-developed Vivísimo clustering algorithm puts search results together (clusters them) based on textual and linguistic similarity. This raw similarity is augmented with heuristics (i.e., human knowledge) - coded by Vivísimo's programmers and partly invented by them - based on what users wish to see when they examine clustered documents. The clusters are shown to users in the style of folders and sub-folders. Vivísimo's Clustering Engine lets you see deeper and farther--with less effort--into a large number of search results to: * Get a quick overview of the main themes that relate to the query. * See similar results grouped together for faster access. * Find results that are buried in the ranked list and would otherwise be missed. * Discover unexpected results and relationships between items. SurferJoe - salt or fresh water, from boat or shore, and did you get anything? |

It uses Vivisimo's search technology. You'll find that the results will be almost identical. Clusty is generally a nicer site to go to for your searching needs compared to Vivisimo. |
