658104 2008-04-12 01:56:00 Now Ive been offered XP Pro 64bit, but I'm not sure what the deal is here...

Is 64bit any better than 32bit, and in what ways (multitasking etc)?

What about gaming performance?

Anybody had any experience with any 64bit Windows OS's???

658106 2008-04-12 02:25:00 Stay away from XP 64bit. It was more fail then Vista. It was supported much less and never really got off the ground to start with. trinsic (6945)

658108 2008-04-12 08:05:00 Yeah even the x64 Vista isnt all that great.. the x64 XP was horrible! Stick with 32-bit for now and review again in a year or so, unless you're going to be using Linux :)

Besides, isnt your CPU a 32-bit CPU?

658110 2008-04-12 21:06:00 I've installed XP64 on several new PC's ( because the buyers didnt want vista ) had no major issues with it.
These days most of the mainstream hardware manufactures have drivers for 64bit xp.
Its the only way you can take advantage of Quad-Core CPU's and +4gb of RAM as the 32bit os will only see 2 cores (cpu's) and 3gb of RAM.

But if your not building a high-spec machine theres probably no advantage.

That is incorrect, 32bit XP also has access to 4 cores.

Vista 64 is a very stable platform, I will be using it myself with my next system, mainly due to <4GB RAM facility.

658112 2008-04-13 01:11:00 The main advantages of a 64-bit system can only be experienced on a high-performance PC/server (multi-core, tons of RAM). It is highly stable but this comes at a price of vendor support for 64-bit drivers (drivers being a main cause of unstable systems in the 32-bit world of computing, aside from viruses, etc). sal (67)
