| 657856 | 2008-04-10 22:06:00 | A friend was asking me why this happens, have to say I know people who often reboot the adsl modem and/or PC to restore their connection, I've never had to. Its not something I have looked into. I thought of disabling power management on the NIC etc, but no. He says this morning: Still happening when I leave the PC unattended and not using the net. At least I've eliminated the NIC, as I can still see the router, just no internet! No email, no browser response. I can ping my xnet WAN IP Address, also the xnet DNS, but can't get any further. A router reset fixes it, as does a reboot, but I shouldn't have to. Why does a reboot fix it? I'll set power management from "Home/Office" to "Always ON". Shouldn't make any difference, unless it's a Windows service going to sleep and not waking up? |

| 657857 | 2008-04-10 22:29:00 | Don't know the answer but does your friend leave his email client running and set to check for new mail every five minutes while the PC is unattended? On dialup it used to help keep the connection "alive" but don't know if it helps with BB. Might be worth a try. |

Some are set to do this by default - it will preserve the WAN ip address (hence why they can still ping it) but the actual connection is either suspended or completely dropped until outgoing traffic triggers it again. Some are utterly useless at re-establishing the connection when this happens, and require a reboot before they will work again. What brand / model is the router? |

| 657860 | 2008-04-11 01:06:00 | Could be a partially dead router then. If he can ping the WAN address, then the PC is fine. My guess is the 'modem' part of the router is crashing (possibly due to overheating?), but the 'router' part isn't. Does he have access to another router to test with? Preferably another brand entirely. Another possibility is a dud port on the DSLAM or a faulty DSLAM - that could also cause these symptoms. Finally, a bad line with a router that can't cope with constant connection restarts could also do it - swapping out the router would help eliminate this option. Don't use a D-Link for this. |

| 657861 | 2008-04-11 08:38:00 | I have to sometimes. We turn everything including router off at the wall at night and some days I have to reboot as can't get a connection when computer is turned on, usually a reboot of PC and router fixes this, but it is damned annoying. | gary67 (56) | ||
| 657862 | 2008-04-12 08:07:00 | I had the same fault a while ago. I scoured the earth for a fix & didn't find one. It seems to be a windows problem, as a hard drive wipe & clean install a good 6 months ago has fixed it. It never drops out now, even when coming out of sleep etc | Phil B (648) | ||
