2005-06-13 04:39:00 | Hi, I'm moving house in a few days to a place were I can actually get broadband . But I'm unsure which isp to go with . Im currently with quicksilver on dialup and my parents are currently with ihug on dialup so the connection will be shared between the 2 pcs, probably 3 or 4 in a few months . I myself do alot of downloading, so i'm thinking that a 1 gig cap is out of the question . So far I've looked at telecom, ihug, quicksilver and sligshots plans . All have their pros and cons . Telecom I've heard have the lowest pigs as they give UBS lower proities (is this correct?) I would like to do some online gaming without horrible pings . But inorder to get any decent cap and speed from telecom you pay a fiar bit . Quicksilver have alot of plans with differing caps, with the plans all offereing free national traffic (as telecom used to before the direct connect boom in NZ) So a 1 or 2mbit plan from them looks quite nice . Slingshot seem to be really going after telecoms customers (good on them) offering a half price router and free connection, at $60/month for 2mbit with a 3gig cap its 1 gig less than quicksilver but you have the option to add 10gig to your cap each moth for $10 which could be nice . ] So what are your experences with these isps (or any others that I have missed)? Also the house that Im moving to might be within the area that wired country covers, if its not then it is only out by a tiny bit . Im open to any opinions, suggestions and experences that you have had . Cheers . P . S - I have to make a decision asap, tonight if possible but before friday!

2005-06-13 05:13:00 | I am happy with my Telecom 2 Mbit/s 10Gig Cap, (64kbit/s slowdown over) plan. I actually connect always over that and can dowload game mods etc. i.e. there does not appear to be a speed cap for my downloads. e.g game mods, etc. NOTE:I do not do file-sharing.

I have been with 'Telecom Phone", the old P & T, since 1969, they have not offended me. With Xtra for about seven years, first on a Modem, & the last 9 months on a 1GB plan. Only once did we go over that seriously, & paid the price accordingly. One other time just slightly over with no penalty. Go any broadband for sure. Going Telecom way, if you are on Telecom Phone will save you $10 a month. My 2c worth. PJ. ;) |

2005-06-13 06:52:00 | I'll go with ihug bliink... The internet connection's good, latency is low, it's a big company so you can have some sort of confidence I guess.. Plus, it's cheaper than telecom, and you get a free modem and connection as well.... Only problem is their overloaded sales line... You'll probably have to wait a while if you call to sign up, so it'll be best if you do it online... Other than that, it's great!

2005-06-13 10:18:00 | I'm happy with Actrix, the first ISP in NZ. Support is excellent, the company's been around longer than any, I never get bumped offline in the middle of a d/l, they virus/spam scan mail, and it is not expensive. They also put out an optional, informative but not overpowering newsletter each month which has some cool links and info. Of course this is MHO only; I've never felt the need to try other ISPs. Good luck with your choice.

2005-06-14 05:18:00 | Ok, Well Ihug does look good and my parents have had no problems with them but the 1 gig cap is a bit small for our usage. I think that I'm going to go with quicksilvers 1mbit, 3gig plan. They dont have free install but they do have free national traffic so I can get all my patches etc from jetstream games and use NZ game servers. Thanks for the help.
