658955 2008-04-15 06:03:00 Hi guys:

I managed to get Freeview TV working with my Avermedia "AVerTV Hybrid+FM PCI" Tuner Card.
http://freeviewnz.tv

All you need is to download the latest AverMedia AP & Driver here:
(Version AVerTV: 6.0.12 Beta)
www.avermedia.com

No other third party programs or special codecs are needed. Just install and away you go. The video (MPEG4) and sound (AC3) should work :)

Please note that your computer needs at least a intel core2duo 2.4Ghz or better to watch Freeview "HiDef" channels. At the moment the AverTV program can only use hardware acceleration for MPEG2. Because Freeview uses MPEG4 you will need to rely on your CPU for doing most of the processing.

Cheers :)

658956 2008-04-15 09:05:00 Except that not all channels broadcast AC3 audio - they all use HE-AAC, and a few of them broadcast AC3 in parallel. Erayd (23)
658957 2008-04-15 19:43:00 By default it records in MPEG2 format not MPEG4
"** To encode MPEG-4 format, we suggest that users should download DviX codec from www.divx.com or XVID codec from www.xvid.org. The codecs are not developed by AverMedia. Therefore, AverMedia could not guarantee the function of MPEG-4 recording."

You need a good H.264 codec and AAC audio codec for NZ Hi Def Freeview via DVB-T

658958 2008-04-15 22:32:00 Hi Bletch

I had a look at these links:
www.dvb.org

Looking at the freeview coverage:
freeviewnz.tv

I live in the Auckland area. Do they use mostly HE-AAC for audio in the Wellington area?

Cheers :)

658959 2008-04-15 23:30:00 I'm in Whakatane (signal comes from Tauranga) and all the channels use AAC. As mentioned by Bletch, some of them also use AC3.

I assume that it's the same nationwide.

658960 2008-04-16 00:00:00 Yes, the signal is the same nationwide. Erayd (23)
658961 2008-04-16 04:22:00 I tried to use a Leadtek card but I could only receive sound but no video using the software application that came with the card. At the time, it showed all the channels were using AC3 sound (can retrieve more signal information with meta data). I had to use a third party software to receive the video.

Which is why I switched to using the AverMedia Card, but yeh only thing is that it doesn't show if the signal being sent says it's using AC3 or AAC for audio. However, I can receive all the channels with video and sound now using the latest software application.

Cheers :)

658962 2008-04-16 23:11:00 I asked AVerMedia for more information about the drivers:

(Version AVerTV: 6.0.12 Beta)
www.avermedia.com

They said it "supports both AC-3 and AAC."
So all the NZ Freeview TV channels should receive audio now.

Cheers :)

658963 2008-04-17 01:21:00 Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but do you guys know if it will only be possible to receive high-def freeview on UHF? I have bad reception where I am, so was hoping that I could chuck up a satellite dish and get high definition.

cheers,

gaz

gazThat is correct, the satellite doesn't have the bandwidth required for high-def.
