Just imagine if you had built this thing and several months later something failed - you'd never get any warranty from SC. Madness. I was wondering that myself - why buy retail? I also have come across 1 or 2 techs buying modems from Dick Smith! Not against DS, but come on, you might as well buy from Harvey Norman! Adding your margin - it's gonna cost the client plenty. I know other techs & support guys buy from QMB & similar - why? I got an account from Zcom - apply online, next day buy online. Or Ingram - I just called them - can I buy from you guys - yes, of course. Now selling Nod32 - just an email! Not that hard. Now looking at Pudney for stuff to sell on trademe... |

| 365671 | 2006-08-15 13:32:00 | I normally give the client the option: either they can have it today, and it'll cost more, or I can order it and they can have it in a couple of days for a lower price. Not too surprisingly, most of them prefer the more expensive option - when they want something fixed, they want it fixed NOW! | Erayd (23) | ||

Usually you can find an OK shop on pricespy that will sell you the product(s) cheaper. Of course it's more professional buying from "real suppliers", but the reality is unless you import or buy large quantities, the likes of XP Computers, C1, etc end up cheaper than real wholesalers :(. But I would never buy "RETAIL" retail if you know what I mean (ie DSE). |

Not to mention most of what they sell is crap. So unless you want a huge argument when you have to RMA something forget it. Reputable and good after sales service applies to wholesalers as well as retailers you know. |

I have returned things - no problems, I have even changed my mind - no problem, didn't even charge me. But then I deal with them personally - be nice to them pay on time - & they might be nice to you! What they sell is the same as everyone else. You mean there are different brands of Intel cpus? Another brand of XP? Well ok. I admit buying their cheap battery chargers to sell on Trademe  Renaissance is the one I don't like - they complained because I didn't always spend $5000+ a month. Geez, then I went to Ingram & TechPac. |

Geez, then I went to Ingram & TechPac. I had a cash account with Zcom and knew Jimmy for years. Yes he is nice but it makes no difference. I had 2 arguments. One was a boxed Intel CPU they insisted that I send back personally to Singapore. I won that by refusing to leave their premises until I had my replacement. The 2nd was a Logitech mouse I had for just over a year. They insist that because their policy is one year then tough luck for me. I took it up with Logitech. Result? I fixed the mouse myself, Logitech woin't have anything to do with Zcom anymore and neither will I. I shouldn't have to argue with them. Seagates have a 5 yr warranty too, never tried returning one after 1 yesar to them but I bet they'd say the same thing. So its not a matter of "nice". |

| 365676 | 2006-08-16 11:28:00 | They also have a "policy" of not accepting ANY returned software even if it's broken. I used to deal with them and had to buy a new copy of XP eventually after they refused to replace one they sent with a cracked disc (there's no way I would have given a customer a burnt CD even with a perfectly legal license). I never did get that money back. |

| 365678 | 2006-08-16 22:54:00 | Nearly 4000 reads on this thread! Allowing that 50% are rechecks to see what's new, and 50% of the rest will ignore the warnings and use SCC regardless (can't/won't happen to me), that still leaves 1000 potential buyers remaining to make up their minds . The final number that decide to avoid them like the plague should be enough to put a dent in SCC's turnover . :D Although I can conveniently call and buy over the counter, I wouldn't go near them myself, but then I'm a cautious bugger anyway and like to stick to my money if I can . | 365679 | 2006-08-21 04:09:00 | I bought a couple of HDDs some time ago from SCC in person at the shop - I had too many suspicions of them to buy online . Service sucked (slow and blunt service), but I got what I wanted from them . The drives are fine to this day . I enquired while I was there what the warranty period was on the drives, as their website did not specify . The answer I got was 'off the cuff' and was shorter than the warranty period specified for the model of drive at Ascent and at the manufacturers website . Frankly, I just don't think they care regarding warranties . I'd consider shopping from SCC still, but not for high return items like RAM . Changing the subject slightly though, I want to totally rubbish the Maxtor warranty/replacements . Some years ago I had a 40GB Maxtor with a 3 year warranty . Just before the 3 years were up it deveolped a faulty, and was replaced (without fuss) . The replacement failed its SMART tests . And its replacement failed SMART, and its replacement failed SMART . Eventually Black Diamond Technologies, the poor folks caught in the middle gave me a drive from another manufacturer . Their entire stock of replacements for this model failed their checks right out of the anti-static wrap . It seems that Maxtor supply 'refurbished' drives for warranties - each drive they replace is one that other customers have previously found cause to reject! That is bad enough - getting a used replacement, but they couldn't even properly test and repair their own product to their own test softwares satisfaction . Hopeless . Won't touch another Maxtor again . . . ever . |
