365398 2005-06-23 10:17:00 I'm 14 and play GTA. Never felt the urge to kill or maim somebody. In fact, I've become considerably less violent ever since I started playing violent games. I wonder if this so called "research" factors in that people with violent tendencies are more likely to play these types of games?

Seriously, nobody mentally stable goes on a killing spree after playing GTA or Doom.

My parents are pretty lenient with stuff like this, because they KNOW I'm not stupid, they KNOW I'm mature and mentally stable.

Personally, I believe it should come down to personal choice in the end. If you don't like a game, don't play it. Don't let your kids play it if you disagree with it. I'm against banning games due to political incorrectness. I'm for enforcing R18 limits. That makes the parents have a say in whether the kid plays it or not.

Its the retardo club that think it might be cool if life got a bit like the game that are the problem, not the people with sufficiant brain cells to rub together to know the differences between the game and reality. :groan: personthingy (1670)
365400 2005-06-24 03:51:00 The "retardo club" are unhinged enough to kill someone anyway. Anything could push them over the edge, a movie, a comic, music.

What I am against is people trying to ban stuff just because they don't like it. The GTA games are arcadey, unrealistic, and the missions are bloody fun. The storylines also tend to be pretty good. I'm sick of people seeing the crap they put on the news about these games corrupting our kids, so all the "soccer moms" get riled up and try to ban the game for everyone. For gods sake, if you don't like it, don't play it, don't let your kids play it. Don't go ruining it for everybody mature who plays and enjoys it. It's actually quite funny how these news articles only show the extremely violent bits of the game and omit the fact that the violence is actually in context of the extremely fun and well designed game. Yes - the game rewards you for killing, but it's also a hell of a lot less realistic than movies. Even though you do control the character, it's still not as bad as other stuff which gets away without being banned. Plotless movies where someone cuts their own stomach open, unravels their guts, and tries to strangle someone else with it (leisureagency.org) - all in huge detail - don't get banned. (haven't watched it, but heard this from someone who has.)

All in all - enforce R18 laws, then the parents decide whether their kids are mature enough to play it.

Exactly.

And I was surprised the other day when a teenager asked me to recomend a game (half Life 2,Couter Strike Source) and trotted off to DSE.

Only to return 20 minutes later, Dejected because DSE asked for proof of age, Seems you need to be 16 for that game. :p
