658965 2008-04-17 23:35:00 Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but do you guys know if it will only be possible to receive high-def freeview on UHF? I have bad reception where I am, so was hoping that I could chuck up a satellite dish and get high definition.

cheers,

gaz

Even though you have bad reception where you are, because the signals are transmitted digitally I think you'd still be able to receive high-def freeview. Just how bad is the reception using your UHF? Can you receive any UHF channels at all e.g. Prime & Maori T.V.?

That is correct, the satellite doesn't have the bandwidth required for high-def.

Bletch is right, satellites are trasmitting using MPEG-2 TS, which doesn't have enough bandwith to send HD channels quickly enough in the time frame

Cheers :)

Umm not really right the Half transponder of the freeview satellite service could support 4 channels @ 8 mbit each in H264 in 720p.

They would need to shuffle things around a bit and lower the bitrates on the SDTV feeds or ditch junk like cue TV and sports extra.

The main problem they would need to release a new satellite Freeview STB that supports DVB S2 and Mpg4. Which would probably annoy those that purchased Freeview STB's.

658967 2009-02-14 03:44:00 I'm in Whakatane (signal comes from Tauranga) and all the channels use AAC. As mentioned by Bletch, some of them also use AC3.

I assume that it's the same nationwide.

Nermal ... do you have this card ? I am in Whakatane also; with a high gain UHF pointing at Tauranga and I cant pick up any signal. I was wondering if you have better luck than me, and if so what tips you could give a rookie.
