Just out of interest Metla, what country of origin/brand of 10 year old vehicle do you believe to be the most reliable?

My wife's car is a 1986 Mazda 323 import that we have owned for 17 years and all it has required in that time is a recent water pump and radiator core plus routine servicing. My business vehicle is a 12 year old Mazda 626 SW with 190,000 K's on the clock and it is similarly reliable, though I did replace the clutch a few years ago.

Reliability depends as much on driving habits and regular maintenance as it does on anything else. Except for Mitsi's of course, if you ever see a cloud of smoke in front of you, 9 times out of 10 a middle-aged Mitsi will be on the other side of it. Either that or a Ford Laser, which is quite odd because they are only a Mazda 323 in drag, and you don't see the same from the Mazda versions.

Cheers

Well, as you said, one that has been looked after, though all cars have certain wear points that are doomed to fail no matter how many times the oil is changed .

6 months ago I had to replace the transmission in my wifes Toyota, Its a known issue in the entire range . . . . $1500 later I was not a happy chappy .

Last week we discovered the seal around the boot had let go, and the floor of the boot was rusted, another $600 . . . When the warrents up this one wil be given the flick . . .

Personally I expect a car to be driven reasonably hard for sustained periods (anywhere from 6 to 12 hours in a shot) I bet I could use up the remaining life in Mrs BillyT's car within a couple of months .

Anyhow, condemn me for being shallow, Jap cars all look like ladies cars to me .

For what its worth, The wagon I just sold was a Nissian Terrano,and today I'm using Mr's Metla's Toyota . . . . muhahahaha .

This has not been my experience at all.

Our '93 Toyota has 214k on the clock and we got it with 68k, around 5 years ago. Nothing nada nil zip has gone wrong with it. A friend of mine has a Honda of the same vintage - he has had it 6 years and only the battery had to be replaced. Actually I replaced the battery in our car last year even though it still worked OK; it was 7 years old and I did want it to crap out on a long trip in the winter.

The older jap cars, and lots of the newer european cars seem to designed for people who are 5' something .

Metla, I am also 6' i find such vehicles somewhat like toys to drive . . They just aren't right . This is one of the reasons i was driving HQ holdens for so long, and prefer to drive trucks now . These are man size vehicles . To me driving any car that i cant stretch my legs out in is like driving a matchbox car .

Zip zap . . let me out of here! :yuck:

I also like the feel of 8 cylinder vehicles . . . . yeah you can argue till your face falls of about economy, modern powerful engines, power to weight ratios and the likes . At the end of the day 8 cylinder big heavy cars FEEL good to drive .

Theres also such a thing as style . . . . give me a jag anyday, but don't ask me to pay for it . . . OK?

365230 2005-06-20 02:28:00 Okay, I'll modify that then,

How about "give me a ten year old jap car and watch how fast I can make it fail"

Muhahahaha.Nothing like a balls to the wall drive through the ParaPara, the most enjoyable road in NZ,

Funny thing is when I was in Aussie the locals considered 200k just run in, and considered 400k to be high milage.....

365232 2005-06-20 04:22:00 I know what you mean Metla, they destroyed the traditional bloke's weekend of beer and greasy fingernails by not requiring weekly repairs and obliterated the market for wheel widening, twin carburettors and free-flow exhausts by making stock-standard turbo models that would blow a hotted Holden or Ford into the weeds.

Hmm...Now theres a comment I missed, Personally I hate cars that are all revs and no torque, Turbos were also notories for a high failure rate for a good decade, Rotory engines were terrible engines unless in perfect tune (which lasted about 4 hours) and a complete pain in the A to drive. Not to mention sounding retarded.

Still,I only speak for my own preference, Makes no difference to me what anybody chooses to drive. Doubt I could comfortably fit my frame into a 626 without my head touching the roof, my knees getting jammed under the dash, and the door being where my elbow should be. Take into account the complete lack of power for open road driving, funny handling and looks of the beasties......meh....Just not for me.

Well Metla, before I had a family and needed to be more careful, I was on the road a lot up and down the country . I started in Holdens, but they couldn't hack the pace-spent more time in the repair shop than on the road, one new Commodore blew smoke like it was going out of style if you went over 130km/hr, then by choice I swapped to the Mazda 626 and had no problems at all .

As for durability and roadworthiness, I'm not too proud of it now, but Auckland (City) to Tauranga central in two hours and a handful of minutes was a regular time, Taupo to North Shore in three hours was common (finish at 5, home by 8 for dinner) and for a special reason (seriously ill family member) I got home from Kinleith (Tokoroa) to the North Shore in 2 . 5 hours dead . Never once a wide-eyed moment either . All this in the days when the southern motorway stopped short at the base of the Bombay hills and the upgrades to the roads into Tauranga were just an idle dream . I invested heavily in state of the art radar detectors in those days .

You couldn't kill a Mazda on the ParaPara, and the new ones handle far better than the 92/93 vintage I was driving . Physical size could well be an issue though, I am 6' but I'm not that wide .

My present 626 is 12 years old and had 90,000 Ks on it when I bought it . Apart from taking a little more care because I own it and have a family to consider as well, at 190,000Ks it still turns in good times on my country trips .

As for the looks, well I can't argue with that, automotive beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all, some people like Citroens and others buy Fords, the Yanks make some of the most obscene looking vehicles on the planet and somewhere out there will be the vehicle that somebody will love however ugly it is .

Cheers

365234 2005-06-20 07:50:00 Like Billy T we have some car memories. In the early 60s, we had Fiat 600. Almost industructable, and we could pack two kids in and go everywhere. Then we got posted overseas, sold the good old Fiat, and with the proceeds almost afforded our next one - a Merc direct from the factory at special prices. Lovely to drive.

Sadly, it turned out later on to be a bit of a lemon, and the cost of servicing back here was pretty serious. Later, when we had more kids, we changed to an Austin Princess which was a splendid car for packing a family plus stuff in.

Been mostly Corona since then ...
