659414 2008-04-16 05:11:00 Well....

I just bought 2 ST3500320AS 500gb hard drives.
And I found that they came out of the box with a jumper attached that LIMITED them to SATA150.
I removed the jumper and they become SATA300.

AND
The same jumper was on my ST31000340AS 1000gb hard drive.

So if you have purchased ANY Seagate drives lately then I would suggest you check if the jumper is there, if so remove it so you can get full speed out of your drive (***be carefull***).

I was recovering from a Western Digital Caviar WD5000KS Hard Disk Drive, 500GB, 7200rpm, 16384KB Cache, SATA-2 hard drive failure... drive only purchased in Oct 2006... but warranty out... Seagate has a 5yr warranty...!

I'm sure some members will be pleased for the heads up.

659416 2008-04-16 07:01:00 Are the jumpers there to limit the drives for older MoBo's? nofam (9009)
659417 2008-04-16 08:55:00 yes, although most controllers can automatically fall back to 1.5 if 3.0 is not supported.

the jumper is there for when that fails to work properly

The only part of the drive that can transfer data faster than 150MB/s is the cache memory and that won't make much difference overall. The data comes off the disk around 80MB/s max.

Western Digital Hard Drives have a 3 year warranty so your one should be repaired/replaced.

659420 2008-04-16 13:29:00 I have one of these hd's, they are blazingly fast. The Seagate 7200.7 it replaced averaged about 40 m/b read speed in hdtach the new seagate reads 97 on average. apsattv (7406)

Really?

Well it sure seems faster and the benchmarks have improved a whole lot. For the 1TB drive.
The website IMPLIES that its 300 out of the box when it is not.

659422 2008-04-18 04:27:00 W D drives do not all have 3yrs. Try having a chat to Dick Smith about that! PENTIUM (426)

Where did you buy it? AFAIK WD hard drives also had 3 year warranties 18 months ago . Apart from Dick Smith that is .
