659200 2008-04-15 22:19:00 Hi All.
Restarting this thread as subject changed.
Have just installed Ubunto to "check it out"
Unable to see network. If I manually enter IP address, Firefox looses touch with the modem.
In previous thread Jen Asked
"Are you using an external ADSL modem? Is it set to DHCP or are you assigning internal IPs? Did you put in the ADSL modem's IP as the gateway?"

My Reply was
"Not sure how to get external ADSL modems IP address?
Followed the Ubuntu help and got IP addresses using IPconfig in windows.(Help didnt tell me what to do with them. Just said I would need them???)
Floundered around untill I found the network icon. It showed wired connection
Selected manual configuration.
Box showed
"Wired connection" with -
"Modem connection" with -
Selected "wired Connection" and went to properties.
This had a tick in "enable Roaming" mode
Unticked the box and entered IP addresses from above.
Went back to first box and changed the - to a tick.
Firefox was unable to display pages. :crying

659201 2008-04-15 23:16:00 What IP address does the user guide give for your external modem for accessing the Admin page with a browser? Eg: 192.168.1.1, 10.0.0.1 ? This will be the gateway address of the modem.

What is the make/model of your ADSL modem?

Are you saying Firefox can access the internet at times, mainly prior to you entering in any IP settings?

659202 2008-04-15 23:40:00 You have installed the driver for your network card? Crow1985 (6683)
659203 2008-04-15 23:43:00 Thanks for reply Jen
I can log onto the Dynalink RTA230 modem by typing 192.168.1.3 into firefox.

If I manually enter the DNS settings then tick Wired network firefox cannot find pages.
Set it back to roamong mode and firefox OK:groan:

659204 2008-04-16 03:52:00 get the dns servers for your isp as well and enter that information into the nic card configuration in ubuntu. I had a simular problem with ubuntu and that cured it for me beama (111)
