| 658983 | 2008-04-15 06:58:00 | Hey guys I have an Acer Aspire M1610. The PSU in this is one of the newer? ones which only really have sata power connectors, It only has 1 4-pin molex available. See the thing is I want to connect my new graphics card which needs external power, the pci-e convertor requires 2x 4 pin molex. Would it be safe to use a splitter for a 4 pin molex to turn it into 2, then use those 2 for the pci-e convertor. Thanks heaps. Also if someone doesn't think it will work or is unsafe are there any Sata power to molex convertors (not molex to sata) THANKS! |

| 658985 | 2008-04-15 07:13:00 | Bad call Capt!, the PSU HAS to have enough amps on the 12v rail to power that card, which if the one in your sig, is I think from memory, around 26a. Please check the side of the PSU, it should state how many amps are available on each rail! | SolMiester (139) | ||

| 658987 | 2008-04-15 07:20:00 | Because the pci-e 6pin connector is for 75w, molex is half that, 8 pin pci-e is 150w!. If you try to power the card with not enough amperage, you may damage your expensive equipment, including motherboard! |

While you can "fiddle" with the power at the end of the day get one thing wrong and "POOF" !! now - New board, Graphic Card - god knows what else - OR New Correct power supply <<<< Correct PSU cheaper choice. |

However molex are not designed to power pci-e, if you had separate rails and took a molex from each separate rail to create the pci-e power connector, that would be different if the psu had enough amperage, but you have yet to state the PSU ouput. Are your PC components worth the risk? |
