| 658829 | 2008-04-15 01:02:00 | One of my computer-literacy challenged friends has a problem . I've only spoken to her on the phone, so there may be vital info missing, but here is what appears to be going on . Her Win XP system has stopped recognizing any USB device except her mouse . If you plug the mouse into any USB port it is recognized and works, but her USB printer and her flash drive aren't recognized - she gets a "device not recognized" error - wherever she plugs them in . Her supplier is saying it must be a motherboard issue and to bring the PC in, but she is reluctant to do that until she has exhausted all other options . (Update) the supplier having heard what we tried below now says it is not the mobo, but still to bring it in . ) What we have done: Powered off and re-booted - made no difference . Uninstalled all the USB controllers etc through Device Manager . They were discovered and re-installed on re-boot, but otherwise it made no difference . The fact that the mouse works OK in every USB port makes me think it is not a mobo issue, but I'm about at the end of my hardware analysis capabilities . What has changed in her environment is that she has bought a Denon sound system that also has a USB connection that allows you to connect to the net and download music playlists (as far as I can discover) . She had to install some software for this, but there was no effect until she physically plugged in the Denon system . That appears to be the point at which it all turned to custard . The sound system is not connected now, but the problem still exists . One obvious further step is to uninstall the Denon software, but I'm reluctant to try and talk her through that over the phone . Any ideas? . |

| 658830 | 2008-04-15 01:21:00 | Is anything plugged into a USB hub? Another possibility is the PSU cant handle all of the USB devices, that are plugged in Has windows been installed recently?? If it was, were the chipset / mobo drivers installed? Is SP1/2 installed? |

Could plugging the Denon system in have stuffed the PSU? Win XP has been installed for a while. I don't know about SP1 / SP2. I would guess it has both. |

No mention of NZ or Australia, so I tried Singapore, and there is no help/support info at all. I actually don't know the name/model of the actual kit involved, which doesn't help. I just checked the USA site, which is better, but I need the precise model etc before I can progress. I'll check it out. |

Like a crap PSU . - yes, possibly, although while I haven't seen the hardware, knowing the person it will be a name-brand system (which I know guarantees nothing, but you see what I mean . ) :) Have you uninstalled this sound system software and tried again?No . This has all been over-the phone stuff so far, and I'm not confident I'll be able to talk her through the uninstall, but it may come to that . |

| 658838 | 2008-04-15 02:38:00 | So you don't go chasing your tail round in circles so to speak and getting nowhere - you have to find out is it software or hardware problems. what I would do in this case is load a Live CD, something Like Ubuntu, Knoppix etc, make sure you have a USB flash drive ( or two), mouse, attached to the ports. Fire up the PC on the Live CD and see if the drives are available - since a Live CD by passes windows this will tell you if its hardware or software related. If the USB drives read from the Live CD then we know its software - if not reading from CD - the board or some other component could be knackered. Theres no real point in trying to fix a software problem that doesn't exist. |
