1425148 2016-08-29 20:33:00 My faithful old XP Desktop has become slow to start so I went looking for the problem.

Malware and Virus scans came up with nothing so I thought I take a look at Event Viewer.

Here I found the following.

What is it and how does one fix it?

:thanks

1425149 2016-08-29 20:50:00 If you look on the right hand side window you'll see its saying your local (user) Profile is damaged, and loading a Temp one.

You can try running system restore back to before it started with the problem or create a new user profile, transfer all the data etc over to it.

BUT the downside is whatever caused it to corrupt in the first place may cause the same problem again.

1425150 2016-08-29 22:45:00 Ok, tracking this event back I notice the Machine was updating and a NET Runtime warning was logged at 2:48am on 29-8-16 followed by the first Userenf Error at 3:18am after which the trouble started.

7383

Now moving onto System Restore, I note that Restore Points were made by Software Distribution Service about the same time.

Sooooo, me thinks an update from Microsoft has caused the problem, which won’t come as a shock to anyone.

However, the Computer problem of “Slow to Start” preceded these events by weeks.

The Computer seems to work as good as ever once Windows is loaded, so I think I now have two different problems, one thanks to an Update and the other still not identified.

1425151 2016-08-29 23:00:00 If you have system restore snapshots and a live cd, this has worked for me in the past

1425152 2016-08-29 23:07:00 XP = old (thats OK)
old = high chance your hard drive is on its last legs
hard drive old & tired can explain slowness & profile corruption issues (could also be other causes, but I'd bet the HD has issues)

Just finished a laptop fix , fast hardware(i5) but ran like a dog , barely usable.
Replaced HD , problem completely solved . Now runs as is should

"Profile is damaged, and loading a Temp one."
sometimes that fixes itself after a reboot , but its never a good omen

When you say slow to start, is that slow to load win, slow to turn on & initialise (POST) , slow to begin loading win (like the hard is stalled when 1st turned on )
Is it normal speed once Win has loaded & settled down?

1425153 2016-08-30 00:21:00 Thanks Renegade, I’ll look more fully into that.

And I agree 1101 the HDD was a suspect so I ran chkdsk with all the fixes ticked and got the following:

OK, still not fully convinced I checked with Ashampoo HDD Control 2 and got This:

7385

So, now I’m not so sure there is anything significantly wrong with the HDD?

To answer your question about the boot time, it gets through the BIOS boot in no time and goes immediately onto the Windows Loading Screen but then comes the delay with black screen, followed by arrow cursor on black screen, followed eventually by Desktop.

Yes I know the Computer is old, but it’s fine for the Grandkids and neighbours kids and the only reason I’m using it is the Motherboard on my Computer died and I’m waiting for a new one which should arrive today or tomorrow.

That is bound to cause further trouble as I debate the “Marriage Arrangements” between “Microsoft and My Motherboard”.

Anyway, we’ll jump that fence when we get to it. :D

1425154 2016-08-30 02:13:00 Hmmmm Take a look a bit more indepth in the sectors of the drive. Download the zipped, stand alone version of Crystal Disk Info Standard 4.6MB

crystalmark.info Extract the files and run, it will give details of the drive including any bad sectors.

1425156 2016-08-30 05:08:00 Try Hard Disk Sentinel http://www.hdsentinel.com/

The result you got is not bad but always have a second opinion
Lawrence (2987)
1425157 2016-08-30 05:40:00 Thanks Lawrence, this is actually the third opinion and they all suggest there is nothing wrong with the Disk the way I read it. Mind you, I'm just going on the overall comments made by the various programmes because I don't understand the Technical Reports.
