| 1422734 | 2016-07-07 08:09:00 | Please please can I vent!? (be prepared for a bit of a history) Just about being driven crazy by the woman (stroke victim) I am really trying to help . Ok, poor lady had a stroke when she was 45 . She has been using a computer, iMac which is 15 years old . Last week everything turned pear shaped when her modem had a hissy fit and failed . She sought my help . So far so good . But, to cut long story short, I persuaded her to ring Spark for a new modem, which duly arrived . I told her to wait till I could go round there and set it all up for her . She phoned me when it arrived and said that her "carer" who knew all about computers, had got her on the Internet with it . Yeah right, well that lasted about 5 minutes and then it all turned to custard! Somehow she managed to switch the Internet completely off and phoned me for help . No, I said, sorry, but I have made an arrangement with you to see you on Saturday, when I will come and sort out the mess! She now has no Internet, no Sky, no phone on Wi-Fi, or iPad or iMac connection! Aargh! Ok rant over . . . . . LL . |

| 1422738 | 2016-07-07 19:48:00 | Please guys, its not about the internet at all. LL's rant was because she has just had what a lot of us on the forum have suffered. I had a client who let their young nephew do things because "he knew all about computers" then ring me up and ask me to come and fixup his SNAFU's Ken :annoyed: |

| 1422739 | 2016-07-07 20:48:00 | Yep, hear it all the time "who knew all about computers" and as ken posted have to go and fix the problems, don't worry me- its my job = $$. The hardest part is sometimes finding out what they have "messed with" ;) Sometimes its actually laughable :) like a plug in the wrong socket. |

Yeah, I could give you loads of similar stories . What's worse, is you sort it the mess out, then every single fault with the entire system thereafter is YOUR fault . Like one I did, one of the kids had an ipod, that crapped out but because she would sync it on the PC it was my fault . |

| 1422741 | 2016-07-07 21:41:00 | Whats hard about a Spark modem anyway? A while ago now, her in Ch/ch changed to Spark, got new modem and rang me. I said all you need to do is change the wifi password (if she wanted to). The rest is already done. She had a look which brand/model she had been sent, went to the help pages online for that modem, found the wifi bit and changed it. Admittedly with me still on the phone, but still, she did it herself with a minimum of help. The most annoying one was a ex-colleague I bumped into again, we both were in IT. Exchanged contact details etc...next thing she was out of work and apparently had decided to set up in business (or at least go round fixing stuff anyway) and I was getting endless emails, texts asking how to fix this, how to fix that. At one stage she was trying to fix a driver....and I said what motherboard did it have? She gives me the CPU model. Uhuh. Then it progressed.....I get a call....can I come over - right now - and help her re-attach the screen to this laptop she had dismantled? She persisted with that...even though I stopped answering. So I emailed her in the end and said if she couldn't do the work, she shouldn't be charging people as a tech, and I certainly had no interest in doing work for her for free that she could then charge for. She got real shitty and accused me of being (insert names). |

| 1422742 | 2016-07-07 22:12:00 | ...and that, ladies and gentlemen, is all about humans just being humans. Yes, it is human to vent, it's cheaper and far more enjoyable to share it with those who understand, than just pulling your hair out. I have a grandson who knows it all, well, he's 12. It's usually Dad to the rescue or Dad spending a great deal of time speaking with people who seem to base themselves in places overseas to sort out a problem. His Dad and Mum wisely have a lock on the office door. I know enough to get by and enough to get me into trouble but I also know when to call in someone who knows more than I do. I'm also willing to listen and learn. |

" who knew all about computers " " I used to be in IT 20 years ago, I know what Im talking about " 2 comments only spoken by those who really havnt a clue . :badpc: Its like me saying I know how to fix cars . I can fix a car, but I make lots of mistakes and takes me all weekend for a 2 hour job :) |
