Questionable lyrics aside (sorry, Leonard) the best solo version imo still belongs to

Jeff Buckley sings Hallelujah (www.youtube.com)

Are the choristers singing from a full musical score?

Or just an aide-memoire to the words (in case they forget them) :devil

It's traditional! How good is that, but I'm sure by the time they get to Performance Time, they do know the words, and the tune... :)

Sorry Wal, but having listened to Buckley's version I found his voice to be fragile, and off-key during several passages .

The sheer splendour of the massed choir was hard to beat, and the vocals superb; but that is not to say that a solo version (better than Buckley) is not out there somewhere .

Cheers

In his defense, it's that very fragility that lends to his interpretation. And keep in mind too, Buckley was live with only a guitar on stage. There were no electronics to add depth or extra effects. Certainly no after performance editing to help mask the mistakes, or otherwise help things along. :)
