1424907 2016-08-25 06:05:00 What plan and what speed are you getting?

We on 100/20 plan.
Speed varies from 30-40 to 80 odd.
Buffeting is a right, trying to watch videos, etc

1424908 2016-08-25 06:52:00 That's the point, on UFB, your video should never buffer. It's ~2mbps for a 720p YouTube stream, so even the most abysmal provider will still provide that (Yes, even My Republic) during peak times.

Therefor it's something local to your network, AKA: The Router

The installer guy said when we start a you tube in should have the rotating circle once only at the start, but from day one that didnt happen.
It may well be router, but we dont have the funds.....
Changing ISP help?
Was thinking about Orcon until I read your piece????

1424910 2016-08-25 20:18:00 I think first of all you should check what speed you are getting especially at night
You could try www.nperf.com or http://www.speedtest.net/

On either you can select a server to test to, start with the closest which they select automatically anyway.

I dont believe it is a Modem/router problem as there would have been thousands of other dissatisfied customers out ther, I am using one and it is fine, Huawei Model HG659b

I use speedtest.net and have a HG659b as I think I said all Earthernets are Cat6 cables.

Any recommendations? I'll probably go with Spark once the street is all connected up. Currently with Vodasky ADSL, but know a couple of people close by on Voda fibre and the speed is pathetic.

1424913 2016-08-25 23:17:00 Spark as an ISP are fine.

Oddly enough I've seen the HG659 perform fine for average home use, but not the 659b. I'm not sure what the actual differences are between the two? Those 'good' Spark routers (Huawei HG659b) are a pile of steaming turd.

On paper they look like they should be decent, but I've seen nothing but trouble with them. Have just switched one out for someone who was having all kinds of odd wireless problems, and I'm aware of another with similar issues. Spark sent another one - same issue. Put in a TP-Link TD-W9980 (they just needed a half decent AIO) and that is totally stable, and the 5GHz wireless speeds are better than what was being achieved with a 80MHz channel and AC on the Huawei.

VDSL connection BTW. :D

1424914 2016-08-25 23:36:00 wouldnt even a turd router still be good enough to stream most vids . given its fibre so will be plenty fast enough for basic streaming? Unless its faulty .

also , what sites are buffering : some may be simply worse than others, especially via dodgy less than legal streaming services :)
I can stream lightbox really great, zero buffering, youtube mostly OK, but WatchMe (NZ) is completely unwatchable

there where known/confirmed youtube issues with Spark a while back , and for me on Spark , thats still not 100% (but watchable)

If you post a question on the geekzone forums, there are a few Spark techies on that site who may be able to help out .

1424915 2016-08-26 01:32:00 Have you tried the other test? www.nperf.com

Also on Speedtest have you tried selecting a different server say in Auckland and overseas, I presume the original test was to a server close to you

As for the previous person going on about wifi, in your instance you can ignore that as you are using Ethernet

Incidentally my wife is watching Youtube using wifi all day and half the night (groan) through my HG659b and no problems (except when the phone battery goes flat..... peace! LOL)

You could also check if you are running the latest firmware by logging into the modem from your web browser and check it is the latest version V100R001C227B020

1424916 2016-08-26 02:36:00 Well my Ultra Slow Fibre is still just that, Ultra Slow, and there is another thread I started on the matter. It’s always my Wireless Connection that gets the blame, even though the kids and grandkids can’t get any better on their iPads and Laptops.

Anyway, I’ve just noticed this and aren’t sure of its relevancy.

Is this telling me the speed between my Computer and Modem?

Note 72Mbps.

7373

And this once we’ve used the Fibre.

7374

Now I’m paying for a 100/20 connection and if it is that my Wireless is only good for 72Mbps then I will live with that, but 15Mbps, if I’m lucky, once the fibre is included, a discrepancy of 50-60Mbps displeases me somewhat.

So what actually is the 72Mbps?
