1423318 2016-07-23 03:47:00 I was hoping at the start to get the appropriate 6 digit master code to achieve a $75-less fix, but no such joy.

I took my Camry into Toyota in Hamilton and the man came out, had a look at something and gave me the number.

There seems to be two levels of security - the first level is to get the radio going again after battery disconnects, and easily achieved by a dealership or the owner as a DIY procedure.

The second level is more complicated to use, but the procedure is readily available. What is not readily available is the 6 digit code which is required in order to unlock the radio, and seems to be a specialist procedure. The reason for this second level is to make a radio that has been removed from the vehicle unusable.

And to frustrate people like me.

So yup, they would have looked at the VIN number, as the last three digits of the VIN are used by all dealerships as the Security Code. Every time I've had a battery disconnect until now, I've used that code in the SEC screen to fire the radio up again successfully.

For whatever reason, after the latest battery disconnect, the three digit code was no longer accepted, and in the process of trying all the options, the radio locked down.

The code I've been trying to find is a six digit Unlock code, entered as a special sequence in the HELP screen. Unfortunately, the suggested six digits have also proven not to be correct, and the screen reverts to HELP.

So, seems as though I will have to fork out the prescribed $75 for the "expert" to work their magic, or probably around the same $$ for a new (or used) head ...

Now all I have to do is find someone to install it for me, but I don't think that'll be too hard. Cheers!

1423323 2016-07-23 09:17:00 OK. Cool. I tested my Honda Odyssey dash removal as I may replace the stereo. Bored looking at the same - and limited use for music storage/transfer. Concerning bit was to remove.the dashboard. But found good YTube vid to do it. Minimal screws.

Basically and carefully pop it off (the large surround panel and the actual dash with it's two upright screws (need stuby) - these may need to be removed first as they screw in the surround panel on mine). Used plastic orange (all seem that color) 4 pry tools which I bought on ebay for about 3 dollars. Located the two stereo housing screws. But...got to change some of non working dash/clock/gear change lights with cheap Chinese T5 LED's to blue/red color. I "popped" the dash assembly 3 times - got progressively easier. First time (if never removed) may be rigid... and hard to remove... worried may snap it...trick is to use 2 or 3 pry tools at once...spaced a few inches apart.

I just thought though about the rear wires - there can be at least 7 (4 for speakers alone) I think. May need connector(s/adapter) or just tap (t taps maybe)/splice them in to matching wires

Hard to beat this service. The new Tuner arrived yesterday. 7 days from order to delivery.

For $22.97 landed, even it were to last only a few months, it's still cost effective - and there's no reason to think it won't outlive the useful life of the Camry.

1423325 2016-07-31 05:34:00 Often I buy 2 to 4 of the same items at the same time from eBay, in case if a item fails too soon. Durability is key here. The more you pay - and I have found about 50% of NZ retail for certain items then the similar the quality. Lot of trial and error though in assessing durability of items. I recently bought two D2R HID headlights for $12. So cheap....I say again...cheap. $80 for the one after market brand at Super Cheap Auto. Very similar...from China. But Honda Phillips Bulb $160 each!

I know though, the better quality ones I saw (with > quadruple sells) were about $40 each online. As for your stereo - may need higher watt speakers?

1423327 2016-07-31 06:27:00 Sorry - Currently suffering a bit of cramps in my fingers and wrists again. Had carpal tunnel few years back. Years of wrist twisting trays from former job and packaging machine tool "wrenching". kahawai chaser (3545)
