1485058 2022-03-22 04:02:00 You should see Christchurch's CBD, what a mess, a combination of the remnants of smashed up buildings and roads, higgledy - piggledy shops appearing out of nowhere and strangely out-of-place new buildings due to bad planning and a general feeling of alienation, vacant lots (bomb-sites), and remember it's been more than 10 years since the quakes. We were there in central CBD the other day trying to get a smart phone sim at 2 Degrees shop in Cashel Street, surly, bored and obnoxious staff, we won't be heading back anytime soon and both of us have been here for most of our lives.

It's a really uninviting place, no wonder it was fairly deserted, not just fear of covid.

Robotic university educated town planners and bureaucrats without a clue it seems as to what makes humans feel at home and enjoy the environment.

Christchurch central City used to be a lovely place to visit, homely cafes and old specialist shops for a start.

Funny that you should say that. We have had a couple of 4 day stays in CHCH, 2019 and 2021. Couldn't have wished for a friendlier helpful place to visit.

1485059 2022-03-22 04:09:00 Yeah staying in the fancy new hotels which have appeared as if from nowhere act as an illusory haven from the general feeling of a run-down CBD, it used to be a thriving, inviting place to go, it's horrible now.

Did you look at the wrecked cathedral in the square, great intro to Chch in general.

1485060 2022-03-22 04:13:00 We live in the East side and went into central ChCh. last Wed. to update our wills, you could have fired a shotgun off and I doubt if you would have hit anybody.

Had to go into a shop at hospital end of St Asaph one way street and wonder about the mentality of the road designers' !!, mind you ChCh is moving to cycle friendly status.

Is that not fixed/demolished yet?

Nope, not anything fancy in the way of accommodation. No fancy meals either. The Cathedral is sad, a testament to peoples stupidity. Took lots of photos, no charge for that though.

So many ways to interpret that statement :)

Now, if it was a Rugby Stadium , there would be lots of Govt money for it .
No problems spending $500K on a small kiddies playground in Wellington , or several Million on "art" installations that no one is interested in .

1485064 2022-03-22 21:01:00 From recent memory the two factors wasted so much money on legal challenges on the "rebuild or repair" options.

Jesus you’re a misery guts. Personally I find the CBD to be lovely compared to many places. Not too big, everything is easily accessible, lots of parking, good roads. It’s a lot quieter now but don’t mind that either.

1485066 2022-03-22 21:34:00 Lots of parking, you must be joking. The whole inner city area is short of parking unless you use a parking building and if you do find a parking on the roadside you have to walk a fair way through ugly unplanned new buildings dotted at random with no theme whatsoever. Sorry but it's a complete mess and looks as if a bunch of schoolkids had a go at planning a CBD with no guidance whatsoever. A lot of it looks like a war-zone.

Our new stadium hasn't even started being built yet.

A war zone? That’s more than a stretch. Stop being so melodramatic. I’ve never had trouble finding parking nearby anywhere in the CBD as well.

Thankfully in this city if you don’t want to shop in the CBD there are plentiful malls with almost everything in them in the surrounding suburbs.
I could easily do almost everything at Westfield, or the Palms, or the north link shopping centre.
