For those who don't have the paywall extension:

The problems with New Zealand's water management were laid bare for all to see over the last week.

Right after it was revealed that Wellington hasn't had fluoride in its water for months, streets across Auckland flooded due to problems with stormwater systems, and this was then shortly followed by floods and wastewater spillage in the capital.

Even the elite of New Zealand society hasn't been spared the impacts of these issues, with the street of the Prime Minister's home in Auckland among those affected.
"Some of the pipes that we rely on to carry wastewater away from our homes and to be treated are literally 120 years old. But you can't see these pipes, can you? And because they've been underground, they've been out of sight and out of mind and haven't been invested in properly.

"While other regions around the country might say: 'Our pipes are fine. It's nothing like what's happening in Wellington.' That's probably because they're not as old as Wellington's and it's really only a matter of time before we're all facing the same reality."

The Government has taken steps to do this through its Three Waters plan, but the response to this has been downright antagonistic from some quarters.

Every time we get rain here in our part of Napier at least, the toilet backs up. Currently in a state.
Council will come out, look down the manhole and say wait.
As always, meanwhile we have no loo.

Gross and awkward with aged mum.

So far they have added to it, by allowing all the extra houses and units connected...which makes it worse.
But the infrastructure, for sure. I for one, am a fan of the 3 waters. May it happen a lot faster.

1485115 2022-03-23 21:30:00 I agree that our infrastructure is old and it's going to cost a mint to fix. The biggest problem with three waters to a heck of a lot of folk I know is the government inflexible plans and their attitude towards "we the people"

Nuff said!

1485116 2022-03-24 01:02:00 I remember living in Auckland when the Auckland Regional Authority was created.
It was going to take over various services from the multiple local bodies and the efficiency of combining it all in to one authority was going to save HUGE amounts of money.

And did it?? Of course not.

Three Waters won't save anything - in fact it will start off with some incredibly high salaries for the top people and it will be downhill from then on.

The ARA paid $1Million to have David Beckhams US Soccer team come over . Just a waste of $ . My money . Just why ?
Not too long after that , the ARA was gone as a separate entity .

The problem with water issues, is the high $$$$$$ needed to fix it all .
No one is going to be able to stomach the costs .

Want to see your rates bill tripled , and water bill quadrupled ?
Nope, so its never going to be 100% fixed . Just the usual band aids that we can afford .

No one is going to dig up most of Ak to fix the drainage & sewage mess .

1485119 2022-03-24 02:07:00 To get the incredibly high salaries you just have to create the illusion that you are getting things done, not actually doing anything at all, then when the sh!t is about to hit the fan you move on leaving the system you left behind in a timely manner to take the blame.

Been done many times before all over the country in a variety of ways. City Council leadership is a good score if you can get it, Mayor for instance.

"No one is going to dig up most of Ak to fix the drainage & sewage mess"

Correct; as we have found out in Chch all the damage to water/sewage and drainage infrastructure is still a long way from being fixed because of costs. I won't bother mentioning the roads.

1485120 2022-03-24 03:28:00 I still get charged just like everyone else for water yet I don't get any as on a tank off the house and on a septic tank. But under 3 waters my bills will still go up.

Its not the program itself but the management makeup that most people object to.

Depends, water rates were always going to happen anyway...Waikato has them now. As in regional Waikato....
It needs to happen, look at Wellington, they can't keep watching sewage flood the streets.........covid? Cholera and Typhoid anyone?

Where in used to work, the the Ak CBD, in very heavy rains we'd get sewerage in our carpark . Even came inside once .

The fix . . . .
is digging up every road , completely rebuilding the cities sewerage system, completely rebuilding the cities stormwater system .
Digging up all the old houses sewerage & storm water systems & fixing them . Doing the same with all old business buildings .
Its an issue going back 100 years .

So there will never be a fix . Its just not practical .
Needs to happen, sure . Will cost so much it will never be done .

Ak is trying , fixing some stuff as they go, stricter stormwater rules for new homes (some local new homes had to put in large stormwater tanks )
When home owners wanted to sub-divide their sections, the council makes them fix or upgrade their stormwater systems .
So , so attempts are being made , in small steps . But its an issue that will never be solved .

Adding a new govt dept is not a fix .
Its a way to give Maori 50% control,
Its a way to allow for borrowing even more money, as the councils debt is all maxed out .
