659963 2008-04-18 05:13:00 I have just tried an older 30GB Quantum Fireball on my USB to PATA adaptor and it doesn't get recognized by Vista (moved jumper to all positions). The drive is OK in a PC case and the interface works on other drives.

Is it common that some drives don't like these el cheapo USB interfaces?

659965 2008-04-18 06:23:00 No .

It did produce a USB error, once, saying it was an unknown device . It just doesn't know what it is .

659966 2008-04-18 09:48:00 As far as I know all USB drive cases use the block USB protocol that should work on any modern OS. However as a Linux user I once bought a USB case that would not work in Linux but did for MSWindows!! It seems that all cases are not equal - but I don't know why?? johnd (85)
659967 2008-04-19 22:08:00 Oh, the mystery! Very hard to know why some drives are recognized and not others. Never mind - only a small freebie drive I scored so not too crushing a blow. linw (53)
659968 2008-04-19 23:21:00 Finally got it going. Those case jumper setting diagrams sure can be misleading. I was reading the pins the wrong way. Finally, by trying every setting got to the master (DS) position! linw (53)
659969 2008-04-20 00:11:00 i've tried a USB to PATA converter on under 512MB laptop and desktop hard drives but they dont seem to show up in Fdisk /disk management or my computer it detects 680Mb hard drives but not the smaller ones. i guess it just doesnt like them williamF (115)
