659728 2008-04-17 08:15:00 I have a Seagate 250gig USB hard drive.
The problem is that with Windows 2000 it does not connect with the Seagate unless I use Disk Manager to asign a Letter to it.

With all other systems, xp, ME, 98, Linux there is no problem and a letter is asigned to it automatically.
The 2000 & xp are on the same computer.

659729 2008-04-17 08:19:00 Has it been formatted? Or is there anything on it??

If it hasnt go to disk management / highlight it then format it. The same way you would do it in XP.

659731 2008-04-18 07:50:00 You probably need to update W2k to SP3 or 4 to see a drive larger than 137 GB and use USB2 (purportedly there is a specific update for USB2); your motherboard specs/bios could also be your problem ( older models cant see big hdds, and/or are not USB2 compliant); you may have an incorrect cable (is a difference between 1.1 and 2) etc. feersumendjinn (64)

It says SP4 in the title

659733 2008-04-18 11:40:00 what happens if you plug in a normal flash drive? It sounds like it may be a general problem with any removable drive.

Have you installed all the post SP4 updates?

659735 2008-04-19 04:42:00 No problems with any other USB device, only the Seagate.
USB2 is fine and once the drive is mounted it is normal. Maybe it thinks its Linux! :o

659736 2008-04-23 13:14:00 Still not fixed.

Any more ideas?

USB hard drive is normal after being mounted by drive manager. All other USB devices are normal.

659737 2008-04-24 02:09:00 The situation is even more strange!

I now have Windows ME as a Guest on the W2000 via "VMware". Works perfectly and even detects the USB Seagate drive, which the W2000 will not.

Very strange!!!
