659538 2008-04-16 10:09:00 Had an SOS from my mother-in-law tonight. She plugged in her new SILICCON ULTIMA II USB DRIVE and copied a photo onto it at which point it blew up! Here are her actual words.
" when i put a photo on it flashed red then blew and it actually threw out a flash and a bang. I was in the bedroom and Arthur heard it in the lounge"

I got her to check the port still worked by plugging in a USB mouse and that is fine.

So ... are exploding flash drives something that anyone else has struck?

The drive was bought new off a dealer on Trade Me.
The flash drive was plugged into a newish HP laptop running Vista.
After she plugged it in she did notice the dialogue box which reported that the drive was connected and working.

659539 2008-04-16 10:55:00 Sounds like a faulty drive .

Just lucky no one got hurt .

Almost sounds like its wired up incorrectly .

Personally I have fried drives myself but they just died, with an error message saying words to the effect that the device had failed .

Without wanting to risk another explosion - has there been any other USB drive plugged into the same port and that work OK ? ( dont mean the mouse)

Then go into a reputable store and get a (hopefully) better quality stick

Thanks for that . I was pretty sure that it was a faulty unit . The only other thing plugged into that port before or after was the mouse . This was the first time she'd used a flash drive .
I'll send her down one of my old ones and see if that goes . Interesting for sure . I could find nothing on the net about these drives behaving that way .

Cheers
