659491 2008-04-16 08:02:00 Word 2000 starts OK and cursor flashes for about 2 to 3 seconds then an error message 1000 or 1001 pops up and Word quits.
I have deleted the normal.doc file, the dictionary file, added a new printer and checked video settings as per MS site. Have uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled with same error. Have now uninstalled and manually deleted all left over files, run CCleaner to remove reg entries, reinstalled Office and still resulting with the same error.
Excel, Access, PowerPoint all work fine.
My next step is to update to a later version to test.
Ideals anyone?

659492 2008-04-16 08:16:00 try a later version of word if you can but you might have to switch to open office the newest version can read and save to .doc I think from memory, not sure though as use office 2003 myself. gary67 (56)
659493 2008-04-16 08:23:00 I have later versions to try but this PC doesn't have a licence for them. I might try Office 2007 and see if Word work OK then unistall and try 2000 again.

I should add this is a clients PC so I can't leave a later version on it unless the client agrees to pay.

I really would like to know how to fix the Word 2000 issue though

Try a repair install of Office 2000.

If that fails, try upgrading to, say, Office 2003 and then uninstalling 2003. At this point run the Office cleanup wizard (I think this still exists in Office 2003 - edit: it does: D:\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE11\OFFCLN.EXE where D is the CD drive letter), and then reinstall 2000.

659496 2008-04-16 08:40:00 Speedy firewall/anti virus is Norton Internet Suite (yes I hate it too)

Will get back to you on the exact message.

jwil - a repair was one of the first things I did but will try your other suggestion.

Thanks

659497 2008-04-16 08:43:00 Disable the firewall if you uninstall it next time.

And keep it disabled while youre installing Office

Or disable the firewall now see if it crashes

659498 2008-04-16 09:18:00 When you said you deleted the normal.doc file I presume you meant the normal.dot file?

What shows up in the windows event logs?

You've got to look at what survives a clean up and re-install. It certainly doesn't sound like a code problem, especially as the prog seems to load OK. I would look at changing the default file location. It is possible that a corrupted doc file is the guilty party. At least it only takes a few seconds to do this.

Good luck.

659499 2008-04-16 09:38:00 Just in case there is some sort of add in causing a problem try this and see if word opens: Click start/run in the box type in winword /a press enter. wainuitech (129)
659500 2008-04-29 23:04:00 To let you know I ended up uninstalling Office 2000 and installing 2003 and this fixed the problem. winword /a didn't help either as same error even in safe mode. Not sure why the error happened. I also had Nortons disabled during all this. berryb (99)
