659478 2008-04-16 07:49:00 My friend's laptop is completely unresponsive to everything except the Ctrl + Alt + Del command. That's it. The start menu doesn't work - My Computer doesn't open, nothing on the desktop works. Yehoshua4JC (13638)
659479 2008-04-16 07:52:00 Has it been scanned for viruses etc??

It sounds like its got malware on it.

Get him to do a virus scan

659480 2008-04-16 08:01:00 He's got virus scan on it, and runs it once every 2 days - he's unable to click on anything on the computer. After hitting File - Run on the Task Manager - it doesn't open the programs I'm attempting to run. Clicking on an icon on the desktop does nothing. Clicking on the Start Menu does nothing. He recovered his system up to two days ago with no luck and can go back no further. I suspect virus, but I'm not sure where to go with it from there. :) Thanks, though. I should have included more info on that one, sorry. Yehoshua4JC (13638)
659481 2008-04-16 08:04:00 Whats on it?? If XP, boot into safe mode, see what happens.

Try the safe mode / networking option, and get him to get hijackthis in my sig, run it in safe mode.

Click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste what appears in notepad back here

Get trojan remover in my sig below, install it update it click on scan, then select all options under the utilities menu

Is he with you now or somewhere else?

Since ctrl-alt-del works are there any strange names in task manager??

If there is kill / end their process

659482 2008-04-16 08:40:00 Unfortunately not even restarting the computer in safe mode has allowed him to click on anything or do anything. Yehoshua4JC (13638)
659483 2008-04-16 08:41:00 Also, nothing has struck me as being odd in his Task Manager, but I'm not completely certain. Yehoshua4JC (13638)
659484 2008-04-16 08:45:00 Only other thing to do then is either connect that laptop hdd (remove it) and plug it into a desktop / working pc. Then scan it.

Or reformat / restore it to its original condition

Not much else u can do if it does nothing in normal windows or safe mode

659485 2008-04-16 08:46:00 Have you tried an external mouse/keyboard? jwil1 (65)
