2005-07-01 07:02:00 | Went to see a lady who insisted her modem was dead. Unticked Use Area code and it was fine. She then asked if I could help as she scans in her (printed) photos with the scanner, then emails them but it won't let her as they are too big. I told her she needs to reduce the size and she said yes, she does that but they STILL won't go. SO I ask her what she uses for resizing them, thinking maybe she just has Paint or something. She said "scissors."

2005-07-01 11:57:00 | that's not too bad. i've just met an experienced lawyers pa who didn't know how to setup outlook express, but had yahoo, msn, hotmail, skype - everything the work pc wasnt supposed to have, plus 100s spyware. not only that - she wanted me to setup an email address that she just made up - i had to call xtra to create an alias for her. came across someone who is sending 11mb word attachment auction catalogues to all his clients - i had to go to 30+ people to sort it out (del from webmail) $80+ pp in 2 weeks.

You also get the "it must have been something you did" problems . People who send mysterious large attachments start ringing alarm bells for me . A quick check is to look at the system tray - if it is choka full of things then flee, flee, flee . The common thing I hear is "oh if I get a new PC it will fix all my problems" . They are indeed correct, as long as I forget to buy a mouse and keyboard :waughh: |

2005-07-01 13:00:00 | with the boom in 5+ megapixel digicams, a lot of people are emailing - say 2-6 photos as is - not resized. I also teach digital photography at a local college & the stories i get... it used to be scanners - 2mb + bmp files, or one guy tried to send a 20+mb excel catalogue with photos to the warehouse office, after 2 days & nights watching the hourglass, they called me. resized all photos = 1mb. | quarry (252) | |

2005-07-01 14:16:00 | I could write a book on it, a chapter a week . . . . . . Like the 40 minute drive out into the country,to discover they had plugged the modem into the fax machine . Or the customer who said they didn't want any additional software installed, then tried to return it because the computer was empty . I especially love the ones who admit they have no idea what they are doing but just went ahead for the hell of it and reconfigured the entire network into a non-working state because one machine was offline, and which a 3 second look in the next room would have shown it simply hadn't been turned on that morning . Or yesterdays drama, where the customer had been instucted by xtra to remove her 3 month out of date anti-virus and firewall, surprise surprise, went from a possible infection to being saturated with viruses a couple of weeks later One that always causes confusion is people turning up out of the blue to get computers they never brought in, a few phonecalls around town and we can normally trace it to the shop they did take it to . Or the comp that had gone back 3 times and had 2 replacement modems installed, I simply unticked pulse dialling and away she went . People that ring up and expect me to spend 2 hours troubleshooting their home network, or department stores around town ringing and asking me to step them through fixing a customers computer . . . . they get a hellava short shift . Even had a another local tech ring and ask me to step him through a job, wasn't even upfront about it, I only clicked on when the owner in the background got snooty and asked they guy why she shouldn't fire him from tyhe job and get me in . Plus, I had another tech ring me up halfway through a job he couldn't do, try and tell me what I should be doing to fix the comp and what i wasn't allowed to do . . . A couple weeks ago in the computer section of a large retail store I was recorgnised by the clerk in charge of computer sales who wanted to pick my brain about the computers HE was selling . Fun and games .

2005-07-01 18:48:00 | instucted by xtra to remove her 3 month out of date anti-virus and firewall.......Yeaaaahhhh........seen this bit of advice given out particularly by xtra on a number of occasions.....along with ....'remove adaware' and other ridiculous advice......cant imagine what they think it'll do to help lol....once went to repair some problems at pc which is used by a motel to record times and length of phone calls, among other stuff. When I got there the owner said she had already tried to get help from the people contracted to supply tech support for that particular app, well anyway she couldn't handle dealing wth what they were telling her to do so she'd called me but what amazed me was that the guy at the other end had wanted to use 'remote assistance' on her pc .....well thats fine but in order to do so he'd told her to turn off the firewall so that he could 'get in' .......OMG.....I rang them up and suggested that was pretty stupid because it left her wide open to 'blaster' 'netsky' and viruses of that nature. That being the case they'd no doubt do the old 'your pc is shutting down in 60 seconds' trick and then how the hell did they imagine they'd be doin remote assist then ?............STUPID people. | drcspy (146) | |
2005-07-01 18:50:00 | along with ....'remove adaware' (the program ad-aware) and for what reason ?......after all adaware does NOTHING unless you clik it up to run a scan.........weird..... | drcspy (146) | |
2005-07-01 20:26:00 | It was just funny seeing all these 1.5mb files of the same scene that progressively had less and less of the original picture left. They were all .bmps. | pctek (84) | |
