Could someone explain exactly what "System of a Down" means?
:illogicalSOAD say:

The Name Game
The most-asked question. "It came from a poem our guitarist, Daron, had written, called 'Victims of a Down,'" explains Serj. "He brought it to us, and 'System' was chosen as a better, stronger word, and it makes it into a 'whole,' instead of the people in particular, it's the society." Ultimately, Serj advises people to "Take your own meaning out of our name. It means different things to different people. That's the beauty of it. It's like putting art up on a wall, and going, 'what do you think of it?' It's many different things, on a personal, a political level. We leave it open to interpretation."

Sounds like the band spend to much time talking to the media, but maybe this helps.

367506 2005-06-28 23:36:00 Their earlier albums were not too bad, but like most 'modern' bands they seem too have sold out and gone mainstream. Thats not to say I dont like them, there are just a power of other bands out there that kick their ass and rock way harder than what they do!

In regard to their lyrics, their aint anything special going on there, besides gibberish and the old classic "i hate the world, the world hates me, seppo bulls%*t", i mean come-on, you would think they could come up with something new by now! Basically they are revisiting an old genre of music and generally failing miserably!

The System IS down!

Precisely my point . How is a 14 yr old meant to appreciate good music? They don't, so they listen to SOAD .

You should ween him off that type of rubbish and introduce him to something with more substance!

367510 2005-06-29 01:02:00 He should let him listen to what he likes, not what you define as worthy.

Some people are just unbelievble.

Personally I was cranking Iron Maiden at 14, at 30 I still am, and so are they. Please say something derogative about them so I can flame you.

367512 2005-06-29 01:23:00 You should ween him off that type of rubbish and introduce him to something with more substance!Just because Ziggy is my son does not give me the right to define what sort of music he should listen to. Thats his choice, not mine. It only becomes my business if he makes me listen to things, and even if he did put SOAD on the main sound system, i can think of a lot worse... What he listens to in the privacy of his own sleepout here, or at his mothers house, is his business, his choice, and not mine.

Ziggy gets quite a wide amount of music that he is exposed to. He has been known to help me at work, and as such gets to legally see bands in pubs where he is there as my son and coworker... he loved 8 ft Sativa, and will probably see them/work with them again when they come back to CHCH later in the year, assuming that 8 ft get me to provide concert sound services. He definatly likes harder music, so i do.

He got to see the end of Hello Sailor last Friday as we waited so we could pack out the lights... He was more interested in the PA, and what was (not) coming out of the subs in the stack. My interests were similar.

The nearest thing i will do to what you suggest is to give him as much exposure to as much music and performance as i can, partly through my work, but at all times i keep in mind that his personal preferances are his and his alone. I simply offer options, in part by example.

367513 2005-06-29 01:24:00 The less people that listen to crap the better, if no one listens to crap then less bands will produce crap! Have you listened to the state of the radio stations and tv music channels? Crap after crap after crap!

No chance of nasties regarding Iron Maiden, they rocked hard back then and they rock hard now. But if you are looking to flame me, go nuts on the following "crap" bands. Some mentioned earlier,
Linkin Park, new Limp Biscuit, Mudvayne, Good Charlotte, Blink, (any new punk is abysmal crap), Rasmus, most "The" bands, anything after 2003 with black americans singing (pop, r&b, hiphop etc), the list goes on and on, oh and especially the Rolling Stones. (Puts on Flame retardant suit and jumps in the pool)

Bring back 80's rock with 10 minute guitar solos!

367514 2005-06-29 01:31:00 Veale, allthough i agree with you to some extent, i feel that your view is a tad narrow .

Maybe its my open mind, or maybe its the fact that i'm out there working with new and old bands, but i feel i must inform you that not every product of this century is without talent .

To be brutaly honest, 90% of what i work with i am indifferent to, the other 10% i seek to work with because i enjoy what they do .

At the end of the day, we must remember that whatever squeals our wheels may not work for others . . . . . . . There is no accounting for taste .
