One thing about living in that area, you may notice an increase in the strength of the hot air winds; that get worse every 3 years and seem to originate from the Beehive :D |

2005-07-01 21:59:00 | I'd go along with plod, though there are 2 routes from UH to Petone/Lower Hutt, a western and an eastern route. The Western Hills tops can be very exposed to north westerlies like Newlands. It would take about 20/25 minutes from Upper Hutt to Petone during the week, though it's been 10 years now since I had to do that. There are good train and bus services in the Hutt, with buses running every 15 minutes on main routes. There is some traffic congestion in the Lower Hutt/Petone area during morning rush hour, this arises from the bottle neck caused by the convergence of traffic all trying to get onto the main road to Wellington. There is a morning back-up from Wellington back to Petone. Coming out of Wellington at evening rush hour is a nightmare with drivers slalomming from side to side to get into a cars length space ahead. Forget about 2 second rules and suchlike. The standard space between cars seems to be less that a cars length regardless of speed - lunatics. The "bore-ability" of a place obviously depends on ones individual outlook and lifestyle. If you want bright lights, theatres, entertainment you wouldn't go to Upper Hutt. If your idea of a day out is to go wandering around the shops, you wouldn't go to Upper Hutt. If you want bars that open until the early hours, have drunks rolling around the place with street fights, muggings and molestations, then get an apartment in Courtney Place Wellington. If you want lots of open spaces, bush walks, access points for tramping/hunting, relatively benign dog by-laws (compared to Wellington which is totally anti-dog),with lots of places to walk your dogs, shops where they know you, and a good degree of friendliness, then Upper Hutt is the place. But as I say it all depends on what you want and your lifestyle.

2005-07-01 23:25:00 | As much as I'd never want to live there, Wellington is a really cool place. The people seem to have a much friendlier aspect to them, and the city architecture is fantastic. | Greg (193) | |

2005-07-02 00:04:00 | You mean Greg, when it is blowing a 100kmh southerly and rooves are lifting off? Precisely! Actually I was born down that way, and my aunt lived in Johnsonville looking way over the gorge, and grandma lived in Khandallah . Man those hills! :dogeye: The skin is still peeling off the blisters I got from walking around town during my recent visit there!

2005-07-02 02:14:00 | I live in Wellington, and for many years worked in Lower Hutt. Traffic was no problem, as it is all going the other way. Only advantage of living in the valley, would be cheaper house prices and rent. Bye
