659851 2008-04-18 01:32:00 Get Registry Mechanic by PC Tools - it's not free, but it's a lot better than the registry cleaner in ccleaner.

Just remember, they don't actually fix a registry, they just remove invalid entries. If your registry is already unstable, they won't improve it, and may even make it worse.

Having said that, on older PC's, you can get quite substantial improvements in boot times and general speed using them.

Always let them set a restore point before removing anything.

HTHThanks for the further info. I can't say my registry is unstable. I have just noticed a slow down and as I play around with lots of programs I thought the registry may be some of the problem.. I use Nod32 and other security programs. I have done a full scan with nod32. Defrag and anything else I could think of. I am always very reluctant to play with the registry.

659854 2008-04-18 04:28:00 Yup - staying out of the registry is a good idea!! I've used Registry Mechanic on many PC's, and I've never had any issues, so give it a try. nofam (9009)

659856 2008-04-18 05:59:00 I use ccleaner and a few other free registry cleaners, e.g. tweaknow reg cleaner. Some free cleaners can be reviewed here (www.snapfiles.com), including the trial version for registry mechanic... kahawai chaser (3545)

RegSeeker is the one I have been using for years. Automatically prompts you to save a backup of whatever you have removed.

The danger in using a registry cleaner is that removing certain entries can cause programs and functions to no longer work and in some cases a computer that will no longer boot.
