659808 2008-04-17 23:49:00 I recently bought a cheap mic with a 3 . 5 mm jack and it just won't work in Vista Business . :annoyed:

I used my mic for skpye only and for my old mic i just plug it in the mic socket on my laptop and then a window pops up asking me if it is a "line in" or a "mic" or something else, I usually click on "line in" and the mic will work straight away .

the last time i use my old mic i decided the pop up window is annoying so after i clicked on "line in" I also clicked on don't show this window again . the window never show up ever since .

Now for the new cheap mic I bought, I assume that it will work just like my old mic but it just won't work . After 2 hours in the control panel i decided if i could disable the mic then enable it again it would probably work . so i went to control panel--hardware and sound--recording, then click on the audio input device, then went to property--device usage--disable this device---OK . Now after i disable this device, the same window tells me that there is no audio device installed .

The problem is, I can't find the way to enable this device again! :badpc:

where do I go to enable this device again? I tried device manager, no luck . and any ideas how to get this mic working? I regret making the decision on telling windows not to pop up the window when i plug in the mic, how do I tell it to pop up the window again when i plug in the mic?

and by the way the very same mic works in windows XP fine . audio driver is SigmaTel high definition audio CODEC, driver is up to date .

Thanks for the help .

659809 2008-04-18 02:37:00 Right-click the Sound icon in the notification area, and choose Recording
Devices. On the Recording tab of Sound, right-click an empty spot of the
window, and put a checkmark next to "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show
Disconnected Devices".

Control Panel - Sound - Recording (tab)..

659812 2008-04-19 05:57:00 everything works in Vista if you get GOOD hardware from well known companies. A cheap mic doesn't sound like a well known company... SPARTAN 860 (2618)
659813 2008-04-19 07:01:00 Does anything work in Vista??? Not having a go at JJJJJ but The amount of times I hear that comment is damn right silly - people have VERY short memories when it suits --- people seem to forget that its nothing new when a New OS comes out - the same problems happened when XP replaced Win98 - lots of programs wouldn't work on XP - and even today 6 years down the track still are crap or cause problems .

OH RIGHT every one forgets to remember that .

I agree with SPARTAN I'm running several Vista PC's as well as built LOTS for customers - no problems at all, if there has been any its because the manufactures of software are not making drivers for the software .

Its not Vista's fault, its the software manufactures not keeping up .

Wait till windows 7 comes out - same thing will more than likely happen .

Now back to the microphone question----- You may find the Mic needs to be boosted, some Mic's cant cut it in Vista - Try this -- click start > Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Recording -> Microphone -> Properties -> Custom -> Microphone +20dB Boost .

If the Microphone boost is not there then your hardware may not be upto the task and wont support it .

I Located This reg file here ( . cacophonic . net/micboost_on . reg" target="_blank">www . cacophonic . net), its a direct download, BUT I Cant vouch if it works or not, as all the Vista PC's I have here show the Mic boost . According to The Site ( . cacophonic . net/?p=31" target="_blank">www . cacophonic . net) it will add in the feature . To use the reg key download it, right click and select Merge . reboot and the boost may be there now .

PS: use the MIC hole in the board, not the Line In .

I agree wholeheartedly, I have been using Vista for some months now and I like its look, style and sophistication (especially when it does things like if you've installed some hardware it doesnt have a current driver for, it will go and look for one, or if you have a problem with a program it will look for a fix); it hasn't crashed at all (very stable, more so than XP), will run most everything (using compatibility mode if necessary), I've even got Quake 1 running on it!

As you say, everybody bagged XP when it came out for the same reason (drivers), there never was much problem with the OS, in fact everybody :wubs it now, and wont let go!
The only things I dont like about it is the size of the installation (wonder if Win7 will be even BIGGER) and the price.

659815 2008-04-20 05:44:00 thanks for the reply wainuitech and the others .

I followed what you told me and found that the mic is already on +20dB boost .

What should I do next?

my laptop only has two holes for audio stuff, one for speakers and one for mic, and it is where i am plugging the mic now .

once again thanks heaps, keep it up guys!

I totally agree. It is sooooooooo expensive. I can't afford it myself but I am lucky enough to be a Uni student, which MS let me use Vista for free.....
