368985 2005-07-03 10:39:00 don't know if this is old news or new for you guys, playing pc games out of the box on linux. article here (newsvac.newsforge.com) plod (107)
368986 2005-07-03 11:01:00 Cedega (Transgaming) has been around for a while now, and is the commercial version of WineX. You can buy it plus the Point2Play frontend to it which makes installing games easy. There are quite a few games now able to run under Linux using this method. There are also a growing collection of native commerical game ports - Tuxgames (http://www.tuxgames.com/).

Linspire is a commercial distro, so it makes sense to make their distro more appealing for Window refugees by making it more gaming friendly. :)

368987 2005-07-03 11:05:00 Its been around awhile, That article is an advertisement :p

Real world testing of the software gives a far less glossy picture .

Not that I have done so, or will ever do so, Just what I have read in numerous places .

Edit .

I should say dx emulation software for Linux has been around awhile, the linked advert seems to just be a blurb about it being marketed at Lindows users . (I thought MS stopped em using that name?)

Edit Number 2 .

I see Jen has posted  And I got the distro name wrong . . . . .

368988 2005-07-04 03:29:00 Yeah, recently they've ganged up to try and make it easier.

Personally I'd rather still use the CVS version ;)

In saying that though, you can play the origional CS/HL in OpenGL mode using the standard WINE by compile it --with-opengl. Works mint!!

368989 2005-07-04 04:41:00 Wow, that program could be mildly useful :D

Anybody know, is it free?

368990 2005-07-04 04:52:00 Anybody know, is it free? The binary version and the Point2Play frontend are commercial products, but you can freely download the source (without the commercial proprietary components of cedega) and compile it yourself. That is what Chill was referring to with the CVS version. Note, the Point2Play is only available as a commercial product.

Definition of CVS (en.wikipedia.org)

You can find plenty of cedega cvs how-to's with google - Example of a guide (www.linux-gamers.net).
