This one caught my eye: "What Can Replace Cheap Oil -- and When?"

What Can Replace Cheap Oil? - (very?) expensive oil.
When? - Sooner than most of us would think.

I used to regard the talk of a "looming oil crisis" and "peak oil production" with skepticism with regards to the past history of looming oil crises and peak oil production warnings and predictions. But then you look into how they got around these crises and warnings in the past - they bribed and installed whole governments and political regimes, supported invasions and wars, and a host of other nasty things. Of course, more oil was discovered and the means of obtaining it, as well as end-user efficiency, has improved a lot. But no-one seemed to have found a valid alternative.

But how much longer would the world turn a blind eye to how oil is obtained? What would happen when control of oil production is ceded to the rightful owners of the oil, many of them in the Middle East (i.e., they hate us)? How can a small, economically and strategically unimportant country like NZ compete against the great oil-sucking monsters, China, Europe, the US, Asia, for oil?

No, the world is not going to end. But prices rises are going make life miserable for many people.

368629 2005-07-04 04:25:00 I guess those inventors of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles had better get their skates on. Laura (43)
368630 2005-07-04 04:30:00 Sadly, those skates probably are more useful than all the hydrogen-powered whatevers they have come up with despite the many years and millions of dollars sunk into it. vinref (6194)
