368489 2005-07-01 13:36:00 An article (www.zdnet.com.au) from ZDNet Australia says that according to Sophos (www.sophos.com), an unprotected Windows machine faces a 50% chance of being compromised within 12 minutes of being connected to the net. There is no explanation as to how this was worked out, and it is hoped that there are no Windows users stupid enough to connect to the net unprotected.

The article also quotes Sophos reporting 8,000 new Windows-specific viruses for the 1st half of 2005.

I'd believe that. I tried it once. In 1 hour there were 23 spyware infections, all the PC was doing was downloading SP1.
Of course it got formatted and redone from scratch after that little test.

368492 2005-07-01 21:00:00 You would think virus writers would turn their attention to Linux, more of a challenge I would have thought. Cicero (40)

Nope - the people that turn that sort of shizza on the public are just mal-adjusted little wannabe thugs - a "challenge" is not what they're after because anything more than a "boo" would have them wetting their pants.

368494 2005-07-02 02:36:00 ...and the malware writing is now an industry. Was an aticle in a recent Listener by David Young (Business) about a whole lot of Iraeli firms got busted for getting spyware onto competitors' networks. Industrial espionage gone digital.
Sio the 'challenge' is now commercial and most businesses still run on windows.

STill a valid point tho Cicero Seeing virus writing as digital vandalism does make me think some of the surely would have thought "Oh this is too easy. Let's try something more exciting" just like offline vandals.. :2cents: .........m

368498 2005-07-02 05:27:00 What is unprotected? Our computers been online for practically 6 months straight (always on connection on an always on computer) not running AV nor seperate firewall (just use Windows Firewall). Have never had any problems... sal (67)
