LONDON - Live 8 concerts organised by Bob Geldof to raise awareness of African poverty could become the largest global broadcast as they hope to attract more than the 3.9 billion viewers who were able to watch the Athens Olympic Games.

Organisers said they were confident they could beat that figure after attracting 140 television networks around the world to show next week's anti-poverty concerts.

They said millions would also watch the likes of U2, Madonna, Stevie Wonder and Sheryl Crow via the internet.

Twenty years ago, Geldof organised the Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia, which raised more than $100 million to help fight famine in Ethiopia and attracted an estimated 1.5 billion viewers.

I Hope TVNZ/TV3 are one of those 140 television networks!!

Organisers of the concerts say the addition of the internet will have a huge impact on viewing figures and point to an American soap that last week attracted more viewers via the internet than through television.

I just hope the Organisers of the concerts thought about the logiest of this e.g. they will need more then 1 server & a hell of a lot of bandwidth & to make sure if one server goes down the rest of them don’t!!!

"This ... live broadcast ... will be the first to truly embrace the powerful broadband internet," Live 8 executive producer Kevin Wall said in a statement.

LOL & This will also show how crappy NZ’s broadband internet is & show what we will be missing because of NZ a crappy internet! & I Just Hope all of NZ’s ISP know about this so they don’t get lover load networks.

In terms of down speed the average NZ broadband connection should be fine.

367181 2005-06-26 23:51:00 I would say it would be far easier to just watch it on TV, the net broadcast is bound to fall over (just like everyother big event that they have tried to broadcast over the net)

Live aid was 20 years ago?

Damn, I remember watching it, Im getting old, I could have sworn it was only a decade ago....

367182 2005-06-27 01:34:00 If TVNZ has the rites then you will see a 2 hour hilites package at 10.30 pm on CH 2 and a full repeat on Sunday afternoon some weeks later.
If Canwest gets it you may see it live or you may get a delay broadcast on C4 that evening.
If Sky gets it it will go live.. but you have to pay to see it..

367183 2005-06-27 01:41:00 Live-aid was played in its entirety, 24 hours of non-stop music.

Anyhow, I won't be bothered in the slightest if I miss it all together....Music is pretty crappy in this day and age.

367184 2005-06-27 03:08:00 I really hope we get some good coverage over here. As well as a good DVD from it. Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, Roxy Music. It's got to be good. Jeremy (1197)

367186 2005-06-27 08:42:00 Seems a bit sad to be bitching about crappy internet, when the point of Live 8 is to raise awareness of African poverty

Of course African poverty, war and disease are nothing compared to the fact that your broadband internet is crap.
