660833 2008-04-21 06:40:00 Hi,

I have just finished upgrading my HTPC for FreeviewHD capability & some weird things are ocurring. If I press the sleep button on my MCE remote to power down, then resume, I have no video signal from any port or the TV output -no POST screen or access to BIOS. I am forced to replace my card with my older 6600LE version, boot up, then replace my Asus card.

Other things that occur when this happens:

-the CPU & system fan will start up, then shut off after about 1 second
-I have no network signal on my ethernet switch for this PC

I have tried it & it happens with both video cards. I am about to reinsert the Asus card.

What could cause this?
I read on another forum that a person was told when his ATI card system had a similar video signal issue to up the PCI-E voltage in BIOS.

The hardware is: -all with as-bought BIOSes

Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 mobo -never overclocked with standard voltage etc. settings
AMD AM2 4800+ CPU
Asus EN8500GT Silent Magic video card-512mb (no extra 5v connector)
Silverstone 400w PSU
Silverstone Lascala LS14 case
3x SATA HDDs (all on prior system)
Hauppauge HVR-220 DVB-T tuner card
Hauppuage 150MCE tuner card

I Ghosted the last OS image from my previous setup which I do not believe should have caused any issues?? How about potential conflicts with HAL??

I am planning to reinstall my OS but need to get to the bottom of this prior just in case it reccurs.

Also, is it normal for the8500 series cards to not show POST & bootup images on TV output? This was never an issue with my 6600LE card & it is a damned nuisance as my primary screen is a 4:3 CRT TV. Thanks.

If you have been swapping video cards with the machine powered up, you have probably "toasted" your motherboard and video cards :crying.

I definitely have NOT been swapping cards in & out with the unit powered up. If I had, I would not be able to get the PC operational by swapping the cards over

I do what any other savvy PC builder does: power down, remove power cord, ground myself, then work on the system.

660836 2008-04-21 11:52:00 Very sorry, just from the way you'd written that passage it sounded like you had (it has happened before in this forum  ).
Perhaps your PSU is giving up the ghost (inadequate output?).

660837 2008-04-22 04:35:00 Odd one . :o

I'd try another PSU . For starters .

If you reset the BIOS when this happens, does it let you boot up again?

Updating the BIOS to the latest version wouldn't be a silly idea either .

Latest version is F4E .

No worries . Thanks for the input .

The PSU is a Silverstone NF400 (I think) less than a year old .

Think I will change out my Noisetaker from my bedroom unit & see if that rectifies the issues .

If you reset the BIOS when this happens, does it let you boot up again? I can't get into the BIOS unitl I have changed over the cards as I've no video signal at all . I will upgrade my BIOS .

Also, could this issue be causing my network to slow down (PSU issues, I mean)? As it will ping the four test packets both ways with between 9-35ms of lag but I can't stream video over it to my bedroom HTPC, & file transfers are way slow . The connection between my desktop & bedroom HTPC are fine: it only concerns the main HTPC .

There are two pins on the motherboard that when you put a jumper over them (or short them out with a screwdriver or similar instrument) will reset the BIOS. From memory I think they are just to the left of the battery.

Or maybe the right. (www.imagef1.net.nz)

I have just tried updating via Gigabyte's @Bios programme. I saved the F3 BIOS OK but it just hangs, when attempting to update, with the dreaded 'not responding' inside Task Manager. Is this the best way to update a BIOS today? Thanks.

660841 2008-04-22 07:40:00 OK. Have updated BIOS by manual download & install with @BIOS. Still won't try USB resume until I reinstall OS. gkar (5215)
660842 2008-04-22 10:20:00 Have started a new install & the network is back to full capacity.

I thought I had solved the video issue as it came back from hibernate but alas, the no video issue is still there on standby. Damn. Onto the PSU test, in the weekend.
