660583 2008-04-20 07:35:00 About once a week, what ever I am doing, the screen suddenly fills with faint red lines and the comp. completely freezes. I have to switch off at the wall. When I restart everything is back to normal. This event happened today when the comp. was just "resting" on the desktop. Does anyone have any ideas to help isolate the problem?

660585 2008-04-20 07:41:00 Click on Start/ run.

In the box type in eventvwr and press enter.

Look through the log files, both system and application for an event relating to the time the lines showed, once located, double click to open the event, copy /paste the whole event back here lets see what's causing it.

660586 2008-04-20 07:42:00 My comp does not have a separate vid card. gradebdan (2186)
660587 2008-04-20 08:00:00 Can also be caused by faulty system ram (is shared by on-board video; causes corrupted video output, which is what you're seeing), will also cause freezing; try doing a memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/),
or remove one or the other of your memory cards (if you have more than one) if you have a desktop, cant if it's a lappie :waughh: (will need to find some and substitute).

660588 2008-04-20 09:12:00 I looked in 'EVENTVRW" ...........applications and system. The "system" showed some errors but these were at least 1/2 hr after the event. Sorry I do not know how to copy and paste this info.(my comp. clock shows the correct time) gradebdan (2186)
660589 2008-04-20 09:14:00 Double click on the entry click on the icon under the down arrow. This will copy it

Then paste it here

660590 2008-04-21 10:11:00 Hi All,
I must not leave posts up in the air.

Couldn't find anything useful in eventvwr. Had a look at my comp. specs via everest.. I have 2x 256mb pc2700 166mhz memory. I think I shall upgrade to 2x512mb pc2700 (333mhz?).

660591 2008-04-21 11:03:00 I suggest you try what feersumendjinn suggested in the earlier post - download Memtest and make a bootable CD, boot from that and see if it shows any thing in RED, if it does the memory needs to be replaced. Theres no point in replacing memory until its tested as it could be something else causing the problem.

You can also download memtest directly from my sig, unzip the ISO file and use a ISO burning program to make the CD, if you don't have a burning program use Imageburn (http://www.imgburn.com/), their site explains how to use it and if you get stuck many here can assist in its usage.

I agree!! Although it is anecdotal, my experience suggests that this is more likely to be a video problem.
