660575 2008-04-20 05:12:00 I know that it is possible to run Windows inside Linux, but is it possible to run a 9x series Windows inside XP or 2000?

I'm not quite senile yet :) but 9x Windows will not run on my computer because there are no drivers & have problems with dual processor. I have some parts programs which will only work on 9x Windows.:badpc:

660576 2008-04-20 05:28:00 YOu can easily do this, just get Virtual PC 2007 and then install windows 9x on it with a disk. SPARTAN 860 (2618)

Use VPC 2004 if youre running Windows 2000 though.

Note: You CAN run VPC on XP Home, but you'll get a "not supported" message upon first run - dismiss it and click the tickbox and you'll be able to use it fine.

Download 2004 here (www.oldversion.com) or 2007 from here (www.microsoft.com)

660578 2008-04-20 08:44:00 yeh I have several operating systems loaded into virtualpc 07 on xp home it works perfectly....they're slightly limited in that for instance you can change the 'default' video card which is an S3Virge if I recall correctly lol.......but otherwise they're very useful indeed...... drcspy (146)
660579 2008-04-20 09:53:00 I use Vmware server to run Vista, on a XP pro machine :D
I also dual boot another virtual machine with 98 and Linux on a xp host

Vpc, vmserver and vmpalyer are all free to use difference between vmplayer and vmserver is you can create virtual machines in vmserver.

If you decide to go the vmware route, I would recommend installing vmware tools into the vmware machine. That allows expand capabilities of the vm machine. Vmtools comes included with Vmserver package.

660580 2008-04-22 05:47:00 I ave tried both Virtual PC 2004 & 2007 but can not install the guest system because setup informs me that it needs a FAT boot partition to write to????
Any ideas?

I have also tried Vmware running ME, it is good except that the VGA 640x480 screen is not good. I have been trying to find SVGA which should go to 800x600 x 256 colours. Haven't found it yet so do not know if it will work.

660581 2008-04-22 05:54:00 yeh you got to treat it a bit like a 'real' pc you cant obviously install windows onto an unparitioned/unformatted drive........so you set up the vm then you using the menu items at the top either capture your computers floppy or cd drive.........make suer you have a boot disk in that drive (98 boot disk works well) and then restart the vm......it'll boot just like a real pc using the boot disk you then use fdisk to partition it then format it.....then reboot using the boot disk and choose 'boot with cdrom support' and then capture the cd drive which you will have the 98 operating system cd in and you'll be away laughing....... drcspy (146)
660582 2008-04-22 07:50:00 I have also tried Vmware running ME, it is good except that the VGA 640x480 screen is not good. I have been trying to find SVGA which should go to 800x600 x 256 colours. Haven't found it yet so do not know if it will work.

Yep thats a sympton of not installing vmware tools. Amoung other things by installing vmware tools it allows for greater screen resolutions.

In the vmware server with the client os running goto VM > Install VMware Tools follow the prompts
