660267 2008-04-19 11:53:00 Somehow I have managed to install W2000 twice on my machine.

Anybody got any ideas about how to uninstall one of them?

660268 2008-04-19 12:22:00 Add/Remove programs?

You can try the same using CCleaner under Tools

660269 2008-04-19 22:59:00 Try modifying C:\boot.ini (you'll need to make it non-readonly first).

Remove one of the entries there (I assume youre getting a prompt at startup to start either one of the 2000 installs).

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect [B]REMOVE THIS LINE

Hope it helps

660270 2008-04-22 09:43:00 Thanks jwil1

I found boot.ini on the second one on the list.

How do I modify it?

Is there any way, apart from reformatting, of removing the second w2000?

660271 2008-04-22 09:47:00 Open boot.ini in notepad, delete the line then save.

Then reboot. It should boot from the main hdd with 2k on it.

Then format the other partition

Is the 2nd install on the same hdd or another hdd?

660272 2008-04-22 09:50:00 Thanks Speedy

Both on the same unpartitioned HDD

660273 2008-04-22 09:53:00 If its not partitioned, how did you get 2 entries in boot.ini?

Or 2 versions of 2K on it?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
660274 2008-04-22 10:01:00 Sorry - I wasn't clear

The 20GB HDD is not partitioned - the only drives on the machine are
a: Floppy
c: HDD
d: CDROM

660275 2008-04-22 10:05:00 You're getting 2 options to boot into 2 different operating systems, when you reboot then?

Or is it booting straight into Windows?

I still cant figure it out, how you can install it twice, if you've only got C.

The 2nd install would have been installed over the 1st, if this is the case

660276 2008-04-22 10:19:00 I've configured it in Control Panel > System to boot straight into what was actually a new installation after the upgrade from 98SE appeared to have failed. If uncheck the "display list of operating systems" box I get the choice of two W2000 and MSDOS (I think)

I thought that "reinstalling from new" for want of a better phrase would have overwritten the upgrade - but it didn't!
