370209 2005-07-07 04:22:00 No matter how idiotic people can sometimes be, my customers are worse!

Most PF1 regulars know that I'm a website guy, but I offer a few extras to my customers which include a limited amount of computer and Internet troubles support. So therefore I try to do a fair bit of damage control by advising my customers of the precautions they should take, eg anti-virus, firewall etc etc.

But here comes one from today that just blew me away...

"Hello Greg, when I bring up my web site and try to click onto a page all I
get is a page of flight fare information, what the heck is going on, we
won't get orders like this, we seem to be linked to all sorts of rubbish
dating sites etc can you remove these links?? we only had 12 orders last
month and two of those had declined cards so that averages out 2 and a bit
order per week and that is pathetic. "

Her site is running perfectly, but she got annoyed recently with her firewall queries so told me... "how do I disable this stupid thing!" I advised... leave it as is!

Obviously to no avail.

*groan* :groan:

370210 2005-07-07 05:04:00 I had a lady yesterday who is apparently running some loan business from home ring up so I could come and fix the printer.

I asked a couple of questions and found IE "doesn't work". MSN had some problem. Icons on the desktop seemed to be opening other programs now.

Does she have a firewall/av/as? She doesn't know, she bought it from a shop and the technician set it all up! What shop? Noel Leeming.
And then she got enraged because I was asking her silly questions and I should have just come and fixed the printer.

Makes me wonder about all those loan customers private info stored on this thing. Well, not so private now I guess.

Does she think web sites only work Mon-Fri, stats are worse for 7 days.

Did you suggest she use something other than IE - a firewall is not the cure for everything.

370212 2005-07-07 05:58:00 There seem to be extremes with people who get websites .

One is where their site is so poorly constructed that no one knows it exists so they tell people authorativily "don't expect people to find your website on the internet using a search engine, you have to use printed advertisement" .

When I told her, via a 3rd party, that the reason her site had no visitors was nothing to do with google but everything to do with crap design, she didn't believe me . Not suprising as she had paid over $2000 for the site by "professionals" .

The other extreme was a site I tweeked that getting few visitors a day and not mentioned in google for the first 50 PAGES for their keywords, to actually hit #1 for their words within a few months . What did I do? Mostly just kill a flash page that stopped the search engine visiting the site, and stick in some heading tags .

Anyway I am jumpng for joy having never seen such a fast move, and they are complaining because suddelny so many people are contacting them that its overworking the receptionist! (really the quality of their customers had dropped because more people were able to contact instead of making an effort)

I kind of agree with you there.
