369878 2005-07-06 07:42:00 Greetings folks, I hope I won't cause a verbal havoc or insult-throwing battlefield in this thread. I'd recently read an article which talks about Ariel Sharon's plan to "evacuate" Israelis from Gaza Strip. Why would he do that? What's his intention? Is it the same, Israeli and Jews? And how does West Bank comes into this topic? Ban me for one day (or permanently, if you are real harsh) if you feel that this thread is over the borderline, moderator(s). I just want to delve more information and knowledge over this article, which you adults out there would probably understand better than me. Thanks a lot.

Cheers :)

The short version:
Israel have been battling others for 1000's of years over who owns which bits of land. No doubt it will continue as humans are territorial warmongering animals.
I haven't been watching the latest but I'm guessing its because the particular bit gets the most bombing and stuff happening there.

369881 2005-07-06 09:08:00 There are pages of websites that give history of the Jews, James.
I'd start here:
en.wikipedia.org

The Jews were expelled ( the diaspora) by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago, and they spread out world wide.

They started to return to the land they regarded as theirs in large numbers during the 20th century, and especially after WWII. So there was conflict between Arabs who had been there 2000 years and the newly arrived Jews. It is still going on.

This forum is not really the place for a massive history lesson.

You shouldn't be worried about being banned for raising this topic. So long as we stick to the facts then there shouldn't be a problem. Following on from Terry's post, here is a link (news.bbc.co.uk) that also outlines the history of the area from 1250BC (before the Diaspora of 70AD) up to 2002. Click on the dates on the left of the screen for key events in the time frames.

369883 2005-07-06 10:29:00 Basicly the Israelis are swapping land for peace with the Palestinians who want a homeland which they have been fighting for with the Israelis.

Israel is the homeland of the Jews and there has always been some living there, but not in great numbers. After WWII and what happened with them there they needed a place to go to and so went back in greater numbers to Israel hopping they would be safe at last away from anti-semitism.After WWII the Allies carved up the Ottman Empire (Turky was on the Germans side),UK,France got some land carved it up for each other called them countrys installed puppet local leaders.UK gave Palestine to the Jews after pulling out and leaving weapons behind for the arabs to use.Diplomacy at its finest. And put a ban on weapon imports to Israel (Jews) and so the Jews built there own and smuggled them in.The Palestinians got weapons from Jordan and other Arab countrys.Military speaking the Jews stood no chance as the world watched on as it always does.Amazingly the jews won Arabs lost. And there were more wars later on as well which amazingly the jews all won despite the odds being against them.So now Israel has the BOMB so no one invades them again. And so the other Arab countries use the PLO,HAMAS etc to carry on the fight.

Basicly speaking.

369884 2005-07-06 14:37:00 To answer your immediate question, James...
The reason Sharon is forcing Jewish settlers (his own people) to leave certain settlements is his attempt to take Israel back to certain borders it had before its 1967 war.

That war involved constant sniping attacks by "Palestinians" who hated the creation of an official Jewish state in 1947. (That had created a homeland for a persecuted people, but disadvantaged others who'd lived there for centuries)
Israel's retaliation in 1967 was an army attack which drove them from land outside the borders and created a buffer zone.
It was supposed to show the penalties for attacking Israel - and end the sniping. It didn't, of course: merely turned more displaced Palestinians into refugees - many of whom are still in camps nearly 40 years later.

Israel occupied that territory at first with a few hardy & well-armed Jewish settlers. But later more & more families moved there & built communities.
And although some have now been there for decades, the fact remains that these are illegal settlements - there only besause of a military conquest rather than land rights as we know them.
Sharon knows that this occupation remains a major barrier in any peace talks with the current Palestinian regime (and isn't a good look internationally).
So although removing the settlements angers many of his own people, he pursues it in hopes that it will show Israel is prepared to make sacrifices to help gain peace.

(That's my version of the current situation. I see others have concentrated on the past few thousand years...)

Why not check out the news headlines on BBC World or suchlike every so often to keep up...

369885 2005-07-06 23:18:00 Memphis and Laura have explained the situation accurately. Give up land to achieve peace with the Palestinians. And stop the suicide bombers.

What the media don't tell you is that there are tens of thousands of Arabs living peacefully in Israel. Christians as well. They are all Israelis.

In essence Palestine was a piece of the Middle East controlled by Britain until 1948. It was then returned by United Nations resolution to the Jewish people. This was a humanitarian gesture born out of shock and guilt for what the Jews had suffered under the Nazis. And this was the Jewish homeland anyway.

The Palestinians deserve sympathy too. Their origin is local Arabs who sold land to Jewish settlers, or lost land through siding with the invading Arab nations in 1948. In a fairly short time, these people found themselves outnumbered in the new Israel. Many Arabs adjusted and got on with life. However the Palestinians nourished and fed a flame of hatred which leads us to today.

369886 2005-07-06 23:35:00 Actually if anything the palastinians are the victims of greater Arab manipulations. Their situation is one exploited By many arab leaders to turn popular opinion away from their activities to those of the Israelis. Hamas hezbollah, etc are financed by other Arab countries as well, and all see the importance of continuing the conflict in the region, not ending it.

A wonderful example of this occcured in saudi arabia recently where attacks by the rebels were described officially as attacks by Israelis. Being able to pull the boogey man of Israel out to use as a glove puppet keeps the people focused in the wrong areas.

So unfortunatly for the inhabitants in the Palastinian regions their own backers do not want stability and peace. That would mean that the citizens of other Arab countires would start to look at their corrupt leaders and demand change.

369887 2005-07-07 01:56:00 A lot of the trouble comes from the fact that many of these settlements on the strip were not sponsored by the Israeli government. They were set up by fundamentalists, who are driven by "faith". Fundamentalism isn't a Christian or Muslim patent. Graham L (2)
