369723 2005-07-05 12:57:00 Planning on buying either one of these cameras. Has anyone had experiences
with these ones. Which one is better Picture quality wise. I dont really care much about ergonomics or ease of use.

I see PS S2 IS has 12x optical zoom and PS S70 a mere 3.6x. Does this make a huge difference to picture quality? Any other major differences that make one better than other picture quality wise apart from the megapixel difference?

Thanks

369725 2005-07-05 22:29:00 Canon make good cameras . Either one would be fine . I suggest that it comes down to a matter of price and size . The smaller a camera, the more likely you'll put it in your pocket and use it . But small usually equals less features, so there is a trade-off .

I haven't read the reviews but 12x zoom is very tempting . Having said that, 3x does the job for most photos .

The S2 IS has optical image stablisation, which means you can handhold at lower shutter speeds (either when using zoom at its max, or indoors in poorer light) and still get a non-blurred shot . It's not just a gimmick, it really does work and is quite useful as long as you don't get carried away and expect it to do miracles for you .

The 12x zoom is also useful, plus the lens does a decent job of wide angle at the other end .

The S70 is a 7 . 1 megapixel camera, while the S2 IS is only 5-megapixels . This may or may not influence you depending on the other features, but the extra megapixels do give you a bit more room to crop down on a part of an image and still be ale to print the result out big .

The S2 has a groovy "super macro" mode that focuses really close - less than 1cm - which can be quite fun if you're into that kind of thing .

Picture qulality wise they both do a good job . The test pics I've got here for the S70 show it's pretty clean at the low ISOs, and nice and sharp too . Noiser at ISO200 and 400 but I'd still rate ISO400 useable . The S2 IS shows similar results . Personally I'd tend to go for the S2 because of the lens and the IS and sacrifice some pixels .

369728 2005-07-14 06:53:00 Thanks Bruce .

I also visited the links given .
I will probably buy S70 . From what dpreview/image resourcing / forums/camera house rep say, S70 has better image quality than powershot S2 IS .

The only thing thats really attractive about S2 IS is the optical zoom . Is
S70's zoom really limited at Telephoto end?? I mean i see most digital cameras these days advertise 3x optical zoom or 4x so i am guessing general public's needs are met! Alos S2 IS due to Digic 2 has USB 2 and faster response in focusing etc but is S70 i would say is slightly behind .

One thing i dont know is that S70 with Zoom of 3 . 6x is equivalent of
28mm - 100mm . Wheres as Cannon IXUS 50 for e . g with 3 . 0x optical zoom is listed as 35 - 105mm . S70 with 3 . 6x zoom should be more than 100mm at Telephoto end if IXUS 50 listing 105mm . Do these figures take digital zoom into account or something??

Thanks

Just ordinary multiplication . 28x3 . 6=100 . 8 and 35x3=105 .

The S70 has a wider angle to start with so the Tele end is a bit less .

369730 2005-07-14 11:05:00 Thanks paul,

So really when they claim 4x Optical zoom, its good to have a look at the starting Wide angle spec, as in this case, S70 would not "zoom in" as much as say the S50 did which was only 3.0x zoom but was 35mm at wide angle.
