For every action, theres an equal and opposite reaction

I am wondering what reaction there will be to the idiot scientists smashing a space craft into an asteroid/comet.
Maybe there is life on Mars or other space bodies. We might find out.
Wouldn't it be ironic, especially in the same year War of the Worlds is released on the big screen.

369398 2005-07-05 00:01:00 The reaction here is the expulsion of material from the comet, plus a slight reduction in its speed and direction. There will be also some chemical reaction from the heat of impact which will affect some of the comets molecules. All of this gives information to the observing space craft which is the point of the experiment viz. what are comets made of, what happens when they are impacted.

You could liken it to throwing a jaffa into a bowl of cream.

From the collision, they would have inferred the mass, velocity and maybe even the density of the iceball. If the collision produced a flash of light, then they may even be able to infer the chemical composition of it. If we see alien spacecraft flying here to attack us, then we can infer that there were aliens on the thing and that they are very unhappy with us.

Jupiter (seds.lpl.arizona.edu/sl9/sl9.html) is still thinking about who to wallop in retaliation. ;)

I'd dip my finger in the bowl and taste the cream.

I fail to see how throwing an Aucklander into a bowl of cream will tell us much about the universe? :waughh:

You're right. After much cogitation I unreservedly withdraw the analogy. :D Nothing would be learned at all - but on the other hand the state of the Universe would be improved.

Bit of a waste of the cream though..................

Improved  I don't know how you can possibly say that Winston. Future generations of young moviegoers would be deprived the pleasure of jaffa flicking, and sucking gently down to the soft brown core would become a lost art.

It's bad enough that the sloping wooden floor has been abolished, putting an end to the freeform downhill jaffa races that so enlivened boring pictures. What this world really needs is more jaffas, and few more of the jafa variety wouldn't go amiss either.

Cheers
