660095 2008-04-19 04:11:00 Sorry for off-topic, but I see alot of people referring to their OS 10.xxxxxx systems as OS X 10.xxxxxxxxx, is it common to do this? I always though the 'X' in OS X stood for the 10, so you just call it OS X.4.11 or something? or is the X there just for looks, much like the computer it is installed on.

I dunno, I see where you're coming from though (I myself hate when people call it "oh-es-ex" and I know how stupid that is) but I'm sure that's the right way
(OS X 10.5.2 myself) if it even matters.

660096 2008-04-19 04:15:00 Hi
Thanks for all the suggestions - but so far no luck. Tried WinSockXPFix - just the same. Yes, I'm in NZ and I use Paradise/Telstraclear.
Thanks

660097 2008-04-19 04:18:00 Have you tried using different DNS server?? stu161204 (123)
660098 2008-04-19 04:57:00 Do you use any add-ons for Firefox, have you tried bbc.co.uk in another browser, and does this image (www.bbc.co.uk) display for you? sal (67)
660099 2008-04-19 08:25:00 I think stu161204 might be on track with the DNS; Look at this solution (www.4creatingawebsite.com) and perhaps try it, where the IP and DNS settings are changed to static; See if yours is set to auto, or there may be a static IP and DNS settings under network connections. If so, then take a note/save them before any changes. Perhaps do a restore point before applying changes... kahawai chaser (3545)
660100 2008-04-19 21:20:00 Thanks again for all of the suggestions. But tried the last one from kahawai chaser & stu161204 and it still doesn't work. There's nothing in the internet security setting which should prohibit access. Also (on a tip from another website) checked out a file 'HOSTS', but this has no references to the BBC website. plimtk (6718)
660101 2008-04-19 21:36:00 Really weird problem.
Have you tried restarting your router.
I have known some routers especially D-Link ones to give problems with some web sites and adjusting the MTU setting in the router from 1500 to 1492 fixes the problem.

660102 2008-04-19 21:40:00 Sorry for off-topic, but I see alot of people referring to their OS 10.xxxxxx systems as OS X 10.xxxxxxxxx, is it common to do this? The "X" in OS X refers to both Unix and the Romany numeral for 10 (as we all know) Apple writes it as OS X 10.5.2 - for an operating system built on Unix v10.5.2 since they killed off version OS 9 commonly or previously referred to as Classic Mac OS after Steve sold Apple on the idea of using NeXT OS on his return which is/was Unix based(ported over to the Mac) back between 1997 and 2000.

660103 2008-04-19 21:50:00 Try accessing it direct with the IP by typing 212.58.251.206 into the browser address bar. Safari (3993)
660104 2008-04-19 22:22:00 Thanks Safari - accessing it direct using the IP provided works. But why does this work and not typing bbc.co.uk ....? plimtk (6718)
