369213 2005-07-08 11:01:00 I'm not sure on when I'm going, I'm trying to time it so the weather is a little better so I can try the cable car :D. So far, Cable Car, parliament, Welly museum and Te Papa are all I want to see, havent considered food though.

Using the wellyton map here (www.wellingtonnz.com)
I see Hotel Ibis would be close to everything, though walking there after riding the coach bus will be a pain

369214 2005-07-08 11:17:00 The Old Waterloo hotel (opposite the Railway Station) has been done up into an pretty decent backpacker type place and is pretty handy. The YMCA is in Courtney place is also pretty good I hear, near Te Papa, the strip (as in bars, restaurants and McD's for the wee 'ens).

Check out those book it now web sites - got a good deal on those in Auckland a few weeks back. The apartment hotels can be a good deal too, often more per night but you can cook so save on eating and the spend per day levels out. Stayed at Ibis in Featherston St once, lucky I left the cat at home to swing with the wife - had to put my suitcase on the bed so I had enough room to get dressed.

As far as eating, must try Wholly Bagels - they are all over the city, haven't seen em anywhere else but.

369215 2005-07-08 11:42:00 All suggestions above are good, so just to add to them.

If your kids are into the great outdoors, and you need to walk off some of their endless energy, then a walk around from Owhiro Bay (at the coast end of Happy Valley) to Red Rocks is really good. You can also get in a good walk at Makara Beach as suggested by someone above. If they are interested in native birds, then the Karori Sanctuary is great - you may see kaka, saddlebacks, kereru, tui, wekas etc. It costs, but what they are doing in setting up an urban sanctuary for threatened bird species is very impressive, and you can do a longer or shorter walk depending upon your preferences. Wrap up warm for all of these - and Red Rocks is better in a northerly blow, whilst Makara Beach is better if a southerly is cranking.

If you are into mountain biking, you can hire bikes at the bike shop at the end of Karori Road (near the intersection with Makara Road) and burn up the Makara Hill tracks.

There is also the zoo if you are into captive animals - haven't been there for years but our kids loved it when they were little.

If the kids like Japanese food, there is a small sushi cafe in Courtenay Place with one of those conveyor belt things - you sit up on high seats and select your food as it goes past. A good place to go if your kids are hungry and you don't want to wait for food to be prepared. They usually have hot food like small bits of battered fish (always fresh), plus chicken bits if one of your monsters doesn't like the other stuff. Not a bad price.

And then of course if it is a bit windy, you can do the favourite pastime of Wellytownians - park up near the airport and watch the planes land for a while. Always good for a thrill, but it puts you off flying into Rongotai :waughh:

As far as accommodation is concerned, I cannot really help, even though I stay there most weeks at clients' expense. Family needs are a bit different from a singleton. Ibis and the Just Hotel both have cramped rooms. Abel Tasman has rooms in need of refurbishment. There is a (whatever they now call) Quality Hotel at the top of Willis Street, but I am not sure if they do family rooms. Maybe you would be better looking for a motel in the Hutt Valley or up the Coast in Plimmerton. I know of two motels in Trentham/Upper Hutt where we have stayed with children and grandchildren and the prices were pretty good. Sorry I cannot remember their names but Jason's should point you in the right direction. However, you may not want to do the Hutt - Wgtn trek each day.

Have fun - I love holidays in Wellytown. BTW, you could drive the kids past the Evans Bay wharf near Rongotai airport and point out to them the ship that is going to be in King Kong! Ex Cook Is trader called Kia Manuia, now sporting a funnel and false bow.
