370838 2005-07-09 22:01:00 Avant Browser, a 3 Mb freebie, has approximately 40 language translators.
I have used it to translate a Spanish web page and the results are very good.

Avant can be downloaded here:
www.avantbrowser.com

CNET Download.com Reviews are very good:
www.download.com
www.download.com

OK, I know that it uses IE6 source files, and I also wonder if the Avant translators somehow use Google's translation facility, but have a look at the languages available: www.avantbrowser.com

While on this topic, does anyone know of free stand-alone (offline, not the internet) translators?

370839 2005-07-11 22:50:00 A friend from Mexico emailed me the following:

I have tested the Avant Browser and it works great. Finally
after many years of going in and out of the [German] site
searching for english or spanish [ha!] material, can I read their texts
otherwise unavailable to me.

The translation from English to German is very readable and
understandable and most of all now I can read texts about the [techical explanations in German] so many times mentioned but never explained -in detail- in this list.

Avant Browser is highly recomended as a second browser if you have a
preference at this point or as the main one if you are disatisfied. I
personally prefer to use Firefox, which is free, stable and powerful. No
doubt it'll come with a translator some time soon.

Avant is so simple, once you are inside the site you choose the language
to language translation and from there on, you only advance to the next
page and it will appear translated. Wonderous things of the Internet!

370840 2005-07-13 16:23:00 How big is the setup file? While Avant (www.avantbrowser.com) says it is 1.33MB, Download.com (www.download.com) says it is 3.09MB. Who is right and who is not? Renmoo (66)
370841 2005-07-13 16:44:00 To get Firefox's back, you can use the Fx extension Translate (addons.mozilla.org) for this functionality, a 33 KB file ;) sal (67)

3.09 Mb.

Even on dialup it is not a long download.
