370433 2005-07-08 03:42:00 Once upon a time in the good old days, not so long ago (1996?) New Zealand PCWORLD magazine did web site reviews (I think review is the right word for it.) But unless I am going blind, I no longer read these articles in the latest magazines.

The reason I ask/tell last Saturday I when to the dentist, he gave me three lots of medication to take before I go back today at 4pm to have the tooth removed.

I found it is a good idea to do a google search on the medication, there is lots of information the doctor, dentist, chemist does not tell you about.

http://www.drugs.com/ is one web site that has useful information

I am not sure if anyone has a real good one they prefer?

I wonder if the magazine will ever bring back their web site articles like they used too?

370434 2005-07-08 05:46:00 I doubt it?
It's all digital cameras these days plus ancient news from their American cousins.

370436 2005-07-08 09:55:00 You mean PC World used to tell us where to get really good drugs? :stare: Winston001 (3612)

370438 2005-07-08 21:17:00 The small magazine Net Guide is the one to use for web sites. Personally, I find Net Guide a waste of time since nearly all of the sites are those I am not interested in.

If PCWNZ were to do web site reviews, I think they should limit them to those directly related to computers, e.g. hardware-software, solutions to problems, price comparisons.

370439 2005-07-09 01:54:00 Hi Steve_L and all else
There is not a lot you could put in a couple of pages, as you said if you want to trace your family tree you should get NetGuide as well, I gave up on it about a year ago, I found some of their technical advice a bit strange.

And I must say I love the humor at this forum, unfortunately I have also seen the "Loose cannons" at this forum as well.

I dunno if it means anything about me :nerd: :illogical but I find the loose cannons doing their stuff really funny!!
When the mods crack down and all runs smoothly, its kind of, ahhh, well, 'sedate'. :p

370441 2005-07-09 09:32:00 Back in the days ERR is talking about, the web was much smaller, younger, and new to many or most people, that is if you could afford $12+ dollars an hour dialup at 14.4kbps ( the local IBM.net charge) :)

So it made sense to have articles about websites and browsers etc.

Let me quote from a few PC Worlds:

July 1955
"Mosaic:Killer App of the web?"
Browsers, Cello1.01a, Chameleon 4.1, Mosaic in a Box1.0, NCSA Mosaic 2.009a, Netscape Navigator 1.0, Win Web 1.0 A2.3

May 1996, ISP charges, just one or two to illustrate:-
Actrix, $14 per month, $5 per MB international data, $1 per MB national data.

Planet Free NZ Wellington, $41 per month, for that you get 20MB of data per month, and 90 minutes online per day, after that you pay $1.50/MB and $4 per hour.

(I was with IBM and had a free connection via my son in Canada as one of his "sub-users", costs in Canada at that time were something like $30 per month for 30 hours, no data charges, eventually rising to about 100 hours/month for the same charge before IBM cancelled sub-users in other countries)

April 1997, an article on 'Top 40 New zealand Websites'....hmm most all are defunct now!

This one still works,
http://www.boarderzone.co.nz

and so does this,
www.cybermall.co.nz
