661985 2008-04-23 22:33:00 I got a call from a customer who has a Compaq Presario V2000 notebook.
It runs fine except for the modem.
When the notebook is running on battery it works fine and can dial the internet etc.
If they plug in the notebook power - Doesn't even need to be turned on at the wall - the modem stops working and seems to do something on the line as all the phones stop working and you can hear the squealing noise from the modem on the line.
They seem to think it started around the time of the thunderstorms we had up here last week.
Sounds like the modem may have been hit by a surge??
Never seen the fault before - usually a modem will work or not at all - not just when running on battery

Sounds could be More like a problem on the Motherboard, since plugging into the Mains will use a different circuit than running from batteries, The surge may have damaged some circuitry between the modem and mains.

Also....all the phones stop working...I'm sure this isn't the case...but that does happen when the modem cable is plugged into the ethernet port. :o

Being that he can dial up normally, I'm sure he's plugging it in in the right place.

Is there another PSU he can try? Just to rule that out.

That laptop will probably be out of warranty now too, unless he got an extended warranty. :(

661988 2008-04-24 01:22:00 I suggest replace the modem.
The dialup and laptop work fine on battery.
When it is plugged in and the phone line disconnected the laptop will probably be normal as well.

When it is plugged in even with the wall switch off and the phone line connected the problem appears.
This is probably because the modem is getting an earth through the 230v socket which it should not normally have.

The only thing common to this problem is the phone line and modem so it seems logical to conclude it is a faulty modem

661989 2008-04-24 01:43:00 Update:

I have been onsite this morning and checked it out.
Modem/Internet works fine until the power cable is plugged in.
When you do this you lose the internet connection, if connected, the phones ring once and if you pick up a phone there is a horrible noise on the line not the standard modem noise.

Brought it back to the workshop to open up and try another modem.
Hopefully the modem I have will fit

661990 2008-04-24 04:35:00 Update 2:

Well that was a waste of time!
First time I've seen a modem built in to the mainboard. :horrified
I've got 3 dead laptops here, all of different makes/models and they all have a seperate modem so was hoping to use one of them.

I have tested the notebook further and everything else looks OK so have advised customer to move onto broadband since the network socket works fine.
Or they could get a wireless broadband modem as the wireless in the notebook works fine too.

661991 2008-04-24 05:42:00 What about the customer using an external serial or USB 56K modem? That is, if they are not really that keen on going to broadband. Jen (38)
661992 2008-04-24 06:02:00 Thought about that but there is no serial port.
I have spoken to them re the USB modem but they said it is time that they went to broadband.
Freeing up the phoneline is the main reason.
